Hello everyone, fellow collectors! I'm Old Wang, a restorer who has been working with jade for half a lifetime. Today, I want to talk about one of my favorite gemstones – turquoise. Its unique blue-green hue seems to condense the essence of heaven and earth, making it irresistible. However, turquoise is also famously delicate; a slight oversight can cause it to 'change face' and lose its original luster. Don't worry, today I will unreservedly share the maintenance tips I've accumulated over the years, allowing your turquoise to glow anew.
Scenario Introduction:
I remember once, a collector brought me his ancestral turquoise bracelet. That string of turquoise was originally full of color, blue-green, and very beautiful. But he usually didn't pay attention to maintenance, and the bracelet had become dull, with some beads even showing signs of whitening and cracking. He was heartbroken and asked if it could be saved. After careful inspection, I told him that although the damage was significant, with patient restoration and meticulous subsequent care, it could still be brought back to life. Since then, I've deeply realized that prevention is far more important than restoration, and proper maintenance is the key to turquoise's eternal youth.
Core Techniques: Turquoise's 'Three Preventions' and 'Three Nurtures'
1. Prevent Sweat and Oil: Turquoise has a porous structure and easily absorbs sweat, oil, and cosmetics. These substances penetrate the turquoise, causing it to discolor, become dull, or even turn black. My advice is to avoid wearing turquoise jewelry when you sweat a lot in summer. If you do wear it, be sure to gently wipe it clean with a soft cotton cloth when you get home. I usually use a dedicated suede cloth for wiping jade, as it has excellent absorbency and softness.
2. Prevent Bumps and Collisions: Turquoise has a relatively low hardness (Mohs hardness 5-6) and is quite brittle. When wearing it daily, avoid contact with hard objects and never drop or bump it. I've seen many pieces of turquoise crack from accidental drops, which is truly heartbreaking. Therefore, it's best to remove turquoise jewelry and store it properly when doing housework, exercising, or engaging in heavy labor.
3. Prevent High Temperatures and Sun Exposure: High temperatures and prolonged sun exposure can cause turquoise to dehydrate, leading to lighter, whiter colors, and even cracks. Remember not to place turquoise in direct sunlight or wash it with hot water. A friend of mine left his turquoise bracelet in the car during summer, and within a few days, he noticed the color had faded – this was due to high temperatures.
4. Play and Nurture: The best way to care for turquoise is through 'playing' (panwan). But this 'playing' doesn't mean rubbing it directly with your hands; rather, it's about allowing the trace oils and sweat secreted by the human body to form a patina on the turquoise surface. The correct method of playing is to first wash and dry your hands, then gently rub the turquoise with a clean, soft cotton cloth or gloves, allowing it to gradually absorb the oils from your hands. Note, it's 'gentle playing,' not 'vigorous rubbing.' I usually play for 15-30 minutes daily, and if you persist for a while, you'll find the turquoise's color will become deeper and its luster more warm and moist.
5. Clean with Water: If the surface of the turquoise gets dusty or stained, you can gently rinse it with clean water and then wipe it dry with a soft cotton cloth. Remember not to use any chemical cleaning agents, including soap, hand sanitizer, etc., as they will corrode the turquoise surface and cause irreversible damage.
6. Regular Inspection: Whether it's inlaid turquoise or beaded, regularly check its security. For inlaid turquoise, check if the prongs are loose; for beaded turquoise, check if the string is worn. If you find any problems, promptly seek a professional jade restorer to avoid greater losses.
Precautions:
* Avoid Contact with Chemicals: Perfume, hairspray, detergents, and other chemical substances are extremely damaging to turquoise, so keep them away.
* Store Separately: Turquoise should be stored separately in a soft jewelry pouch or box to avoid friction with other hard objects.
* Patience and Meticulousness: Turquoise maintenance is a long and delicate process that requires sufficient patience and meticulousness.
Experience Summary:
Turquoise has a life of its own; it will become more beautiful with time and your careful care. As a restorer, I deeply understand that every piece of jade carries the owner's emotions and stories. So, please treat your turquoise well, cherish it with the right methods, and it will surely repay you with its most beautiful form. Remember, the best maintenance is daily prevention and meticulous care. I hope my experience can help everyone, making your turquoise shine brightly forever!
