It transcends the single standard of color, placing greater emphasis on the cultural and collection value inherent in jadeite as a work of art.

For example, I once saw a colorless, icy-textured (冰种) jadeite with excellent transparency. A master carver skillfully utilized its crystal-clear characteristics to create a deeply evocative "Fisherman's Evening Song" (渔舟唱晚) scene. Although it lacked a rich green color, its exquisite carving, unique creativity, and rare texture and transparency made its market value far exceed that of ordinary green jadeite of the same size. This is an embodiment of "overall impression"—it represents the fusion of jadeite art and humanistic values, and it is the trend for high-end jadeite collection in the future.

II. The Origin Myth and "Texture is King": A Rational View of Jadeite's "Pedigree"

"Burmese jadeite" is a term almost all collectors are familiar with. However, with the increasing depletion of resources and the gradual recognition of jadeite from other origins, it is necessary for us to examine the concept of "origin" more rationally.

Indeed, Myanmar is the primary source of high-quality jadeite, but not all Burmese jadeite is priceless. Similarly, high-quality jadeite occasionally appears in other regions such as Guatemala and Russia. I have seen some collectors who blindly pursue "Burmese old mine" jadeite, yet overlook core elements such as the jadeite's texture and transparency, color, and flaws. The result is often paying a high price for a piece of jadeite with a "distinguished pedigree" but mediocre quality.

My view is: texture and transparency are king, origin is secondary. Under the premise of comparable texture and transparency, color, and carving, Burmese old mine jadeite naturally holds greater collection value. However, if a piece of Guatemalan jadeite has an icy texture or better, a vibrant color, and exquisite carving, its value is absolutely not inferior to a Burmese jadeite with ordinary texture and transparency. In an era of increasingly scarce resources, we should look globally with an open mind to discover and collect jadeite that truly possesses intrinsic value.

In the past, jadeite carving was often seen as "adding flowers to embroidery"—an embellishment to highlight the material itself. A good jadeite carving is a perfect combination of material and craftsmanship.
