Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Tightens, High-End Market Prices Soar, Industry Faces Transformation Challenges
【Beijing, March 2024】 The global jadeite market continues to be significantly impacted by the persistent tight supply of rough jadeite from Myanmar. According to the latest industry monitoring data, March saw a general upward trend in rough jadeite prices, with high-quality varieties such as 'ice jade' and 'glass jade' showing the most prominent gains, reaching double-digit percentage increases. In contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end roughs remained relatively stable. This trend not only reflects the strong market demand for premium jadeite but also signals a profound structural adjustment throughout the entire jadeite industry chain.
For a long time, Myanmar, as the world's primary source of rough jadeite, has directly influenced the global jadeite market. In recent years, due to a confluence of factors including changes in mining policies, geopolitical risks, and stricter environmental regulations, Myanmar's rough jadeite exports have continued to shrink. According to incomplete statistics, official rough jadeite exports from Myanmar have decreased by approximately 15%-20% year-on-year over the past year, with premium roughs becoming even scarcer in the market. This structural shift in supply has directly led to continuous price increases.
"The current market exhibits a clear polarization," stated Li Ming (pseudonym), a senior expert from the Gem & Jewelry Trade Association of China, in an interview with our reporter. "The scarcity of high-end rough jadeite is becoming increasingly prominent, making it a focal point for collectors and investors worldwide. We have observed that some top-tier 'ice jade' and 'glass jade' roughs are repeatedly setting new records at auctions, with price increases even surpassing traditional safe-haven assets like gold during the same period. This indicates that, against a backdrop of increasing macroeconomic uncertainty, premium jadeite, which combines scarcity, cultural value, and investment attributes, is being viewed as an important store of value."
Data analysis shows that the average price of high-quality 'ice jade' roughs increased by approximately 12% this month compared to the previous month, with some exceptional pieces recording gains of over 20%. Similarly, 'glass jade' roughs, particularly those with vibrant positive green hues, generally saw price increases between 10%-15%. In contrast, mid-to-low-end roughs such as 'glutinous jade' and 'bean jade,' while experiencing slight upticks, showed relatively smaller overall fluctuations, with increases generally contained within 3%-5%. This suggests stable market demand but a lack of the explosive growth seen in high-end varieties.
This price differentiation presents both new challenges and opportunities for the jadeite processing and retail industries. On one hand, the profit margins for high-end finished jadeite products are substantial, but the cost and difficulty of acquiring quality roughs have also increased, placing higher demands on enterprises' financial strength and appraisal capabilities. On the other hand, while the mid-to-low-end jadeite market offers relatively lower profit margins, its vast market size still makes it the preferred choice for most consumers' entry-level collections and adornments. Some companies in the industry have begun to adjust their strategies, increasing investment in design innovation and brand building, striving to cope with rising rough costs by enhancing added value.
Looking ahead, the tight supply of rough jadeite is expected to persist for some time. Expert Li Ming suggests that industry enterprises should actively explore diversified rough procurement channels and strengthen cooperation and communication with local mining areas in Myanmar to ensure supply chain stability. Furthermore, promoting jadeite culture and innovation, and guiding consumers towards rational consumption, are also crucial directions for fostering healthy and sustainable industry development. As consumer awareness of jadeite continues to grow, along with increasing demand for personalized and customized products, the jadeite industry is poised to cultivate new growth points amidst challenges, moving towards a more mature and diversified development stage.
