Lian Shan Southern Red Agate Raw Material Supply Tightens, Market Prices Poised for New Surge
Lian Shan, Sichuan, October 26, 2023 – Recent developments in the core mining areas of Lian Shan, Sichuan, renowned for its Southern Red Agate, indicate a significant shift in raw material extraction. According to the latest on-site reports obtained by our correspondent, the output of high-quality Southern Red Agate rough stones from this region is experiencing a noticeable decline. This trend introduces new uncertainties into the already vibrant Southern Red Agate market and signals a potential new wave of price increases.
Southern Red Agate, with its warm texture, rich color, and profound cultural heritage, has garnered immense popularity in the Chinese and international jewelry and antique markets in recent years. Lian Shan, as one of its most crucial origins, directly influences the entire industry's dynamics through its raw material supply. In previous years, driven by continuous market demand, the intensity of mining in the Lian Shan area reached its peak. However, the non-renewable nature of mineral resources and complex geological conditions have progressively made the acquisition of high-quality raw materials more challenging.
"We have observed a quarter-on-quarter decrease of approximately 15% to 20% in the supply of high-grade Southern Red Agate rough stones from the Lian Shan region since the third quarter of this year," stated Professor Li Mingde, Vice President of the China Gem and Jade Association and a seasoned jade appraiser, in an interview with our newspaper. "Especially for top-tier materials reaching 'persimmon red' or 'brocade red' grades, their market circulation has drastically shrunk. This is not an isolated incident but a natural consequence of gradually depleting veins and continuously rising extraction costs."
Professor Li further elaborated that Southern Red Agate mining is not an easy task. Many high-quality veins are deeply buried, making extraction difficult and risky. As shallow-layer resources deplete, miners are forced to delve into more complex geological strata, which not only increases mining costs but also limits extraction efficiency. Concurrently, local government regulations on unregulated mining have been strengthened to protect the ecological environment, which has also, to some extent, impacted raw material output.
Market data indicates that the overall market size of Southern Red Agate has surpassed 10 billion RMB in the past year, with the transaction volume of high-end exquisite Southern Red Agate increasing year by year. According to incomplete statistics, over the past three years, the price of superior-grade Lian Shan Southern Red Agate has risen by an average of over 20% annually, with some rare exquisite pieces even doubling in value. The current tightening of high-quality raw material supply will undoubtedly further drive up market prices.
"Based on the current situation, the tight supply of high-quality raw materials from Lian Shan Southern Red Agate is unlikely to ease in the short term," predicted Ms. Wang Li, a senior analyst at the Shanghai Jewelry Exchange. "Considering the robust rigid demand for Southern Red Agate in the market, coupled with its investment properties as a scarce resource, it is anticipated that the market price of Lian Shan Southern Red Agate will see an increase of 5% to 15% within the next 6-12 months, with exquisite pieces potentially experiencing even higher gains."
For consumers and investors, this means that the opportunity cost of acquiring high-quality Southern Red Agate will further increase. Ms. Wang Li advises that in the current market environment, when purchasing Southern Red Agate, greater emphasis should be placed on its quality, craftsmanship, and the reliability of its origin, avoiding blind speculation, and simultaneously being wary of potential instances of inferior products being passed off as superior ones.
Looking ahead, as the supply of high-quality raw materials from the Lian Shan region continues to diminish, the collection and investment value of Southern Red Agate will become even more prominent. Industry experts generally believe that the future Southern Red Agate market will focus more on refinement and brand development. Concurrently, attention to Southern Red Agate from other origins, such as Baoshan in Yunnan, may also increase to compensate for the supply shortages from Lian Shan. Nevertheless, the unique geographical characteristics and historical legacy of Lian Shan Southern Red Agate will continue to ensure its irreplaceable position in the market.
