Liangshan Southern Red Agate: Premium Raw Material Supply Tightens, Market Faces Upward Price Pressure

Liangshan, Sichuan, May 15, 2024 – The core production area of Chinese Southern Red Agate, Liangshan in Sichuan, is experiencing significant changes in its raw material extraction dynamics. According to in-depth investigations by our reporter in the production area and consolidated market information, the output of high-quality Southern Red Agate raw materials in the Liangshan region continues to decline, leading to increasingly tight market supply. This signals an impending upward price pressure for Southern Red Agate, especially for high-end exquisite pieces, in the foreseeable future.

Southern Red Agate, with its warm texture, rich red color, and rarity, occupies a unique position in the Chinese jewelry and jade market. Liangshan, as one of its most important origins, has its mining status directly affecting the entire industry. In recent years, as the market enthusiasm for Southern Red Agate continuously soared, the intensity of mining in the production area once peaked. However, like the challenges faced by all non-renewable resources, the risks of over-extraction and resource depletion are gradually emerging.

“We have observed a significant decrease in the proportion of high-quality Southern Red Agate rough stones newly extracted from the Liangshan area since the second half of last year,” stated Professor Li Ming, Vice President of the China Jewelry and Jade Association and a renowned jade appraisal expert, in an interview with our newspaper. “Previously, some mining areas could consistently produce large, uniformly colored, crack-free premium materials. However, the frequency of such raw materials appearing has drastically reduced, and some old mining areas have virtually ceased the extraction of premium materials. This has directly led to a scarcity of exquisite raw materials in market circulation.”

Market data indicates that the overall extraction volume of Liangshan Southern Red Agate rough stones in 2023 decreased by approximately 15% compared to 2022, with the output of collectible-grade premium rough stones dropping by over 25%. This trend continued to worsen in the first quarter of this year. Currently, the premium Southern Red Agate rough stones circulating in the market primarily rely on early inventories and a small amount of sporadic output, exacerbating the supply-demand imbalance.

“Now, to acquire a piece of high-grade Liangshan Southern Red Agate, one needs not only luck but also to pay a higher cost,” revealed Mr. Wang, a wholesaler who has been dealing in Southern Red Agate in Chengdu for many years. “Last year, a medium-to-high-grade Southern Red Agate bead material might have been priced between 300-500 yuan per gram. But now, materials of the same quality have generally increased by 15% to 20%, with some rare items seeing even larger increases. We anticipate that if this trend continues, by the end of this year, the price of exquisite Southern Red Agate could see another 10% to 15% increase.”

In addition to resource depletion, increasingly stringent environmental policies have also impacted the extraction of Liangshan Southern Red Agate. Local governments have continuously increased investment and regulatory efforts in ecological protection, leading to the suspension or restriction of some mining activities that do not meet environmental standards, further compressing the supply of raw materials.

Looking ahead, the Southern Red Agate market is expected to show a polarized trend. For ordinary quality Southern Red Agate, prices may remain relatively stable or even fluctuate slightly due to relatively large market inventories. However, for collectible-grade Southern Red Agate with rich color, fine texture, and no flaws, its scarcity will become even more prominent, and price increases will be an inevitable trend. This is undoubtedly a signal worth noting for collectors and investors.

Professor Li Ming suggested: “Facing the scarcity of high-quality raw materials, the industry should focus more on the refined utilization of existing resources and enhance the added value of carving and design craftsmanship. At the same time, consumers should pay more attention to identification when purchasing, choose reputable merchants, and have a clearer understanding of the rarity and value of Southern Red Agate.”

The new dynamics in Liangshan Southern Red Agate mining are not only a warning of resource scarcity but also an opportunity for market revaluation. The industry and beyond are closely watching, hoping to find new development opportunities amidst the challenges.
