Industry Observation: In 2024, the global gemstone and jewelry industry has shown strong signs of recovery after the pandemic downturn. Major international jewelry exhibitions have not only returned to their pre-pandemic glory but have also set new records in terms of product diversity, buyer participation, and transaction volume. This reflects not only a return of market confidence but also the embodiment of industry innovation and integration.

From the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show early in the year to JCK Las Vegas mid-year, and then the Shanghai International Jewellery Show towards the end, a series of important exhibitions have provided invaluable platforms for global jade and jewelry merchants to showcase new products, expand markets, and exchange experiences. Taking the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in March this year as an example, according to the organizer, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the five-day exhibition attracted nearly 3,000 exhibitors from over 30 countries and regions, as well as more than 50,000 professional buyers. Among them, the number of buyers from mainland China, India, the United States, and European regions increased by over 25% year-on-year, indicating robust demand in key consumer markets.

Of particular note is the increasing prominence of jade, a treasure of oriental jewelry, in major exhibitions. At JCK Las Vegas, the newly established 'Asia Showcase' pavilion featured high-quality jadeite, Hetian jade, and nephrite exhibitors from Yunnan, China, Myanmar, and British Columbia, Canada, attracting significant attention. According to Ms. Sarah Miller, the exhibition director, inquiries and potential orders for jade products in the pavilion increased by 18% compared to the same period last year, especially for jade carving artworks with unique design concepts and cultural connotations, which were favored by high-end collectors from North America and Europe. For instance, a set of Hetian jade carvings titled 'Mountains and Rivers' by renowned Chinese jade carving master Mr. Zhang Mingyuan from Suzhou, was acquired by an American private collector for over 1.2 million USD during the exhibition, setting a new transaction record for Hetian jade artworks at an international exhibition in recent years.

Furthermore, technology empowerment has also become a highlight of this year's jewelry exhibitions. Emerging technologies such as blockchain traceability, 3D printing for jewelry design, and virtual reality (VR) try-on experiences have been widely applied. For example, at the Shanghai International Jewellery Show, 'Baolian Technology,' a leading domestic jewelry technology company, showcased its latest blockchain traceability platform for jadeite. By providing a unique digital identity for every jadeite rough and finished product, it significantly enhanced consumer trust in product authenticity and origin. Dr. Li Hua, CEO of Baolian Technology, revealed that the platform has currently reached cooperation intentions with over 50 well-known domestic jewelry brands and is expected to cover over 30% of the high-end jadeite market nationwide next year.

From a market trend perspective, consumer demand for personalized, customized, and sustainable jewelry is growing. During the exhibitions, many independent designer brands and eco-friendly jewelry merchants received enthusiastic attention. For example, at Vicenzaoro in Italy, a startup named 'Green Gems' showcased its collection of jade-inlaid jewelry made from recycled gold and conflict-free gemstones. Its unique eco-friendly philosophy and stylish design secured orders from several international buyers. Founder Elena Rossi stated: 'We believe that the future jewelry market will pay more attention to product social responsibility and environmental friendliness. Jade, as a natural and sustainable material, perfectly aligns with this trend.'

Looking ahead, with the continued global economic recovery and increased consumer purchasing power, the importance of gemstone and jewelry exhibitions will further enhance. Industry participants should seize opportunities, actively embrace innovation, deepen international cooperation, and jointly promote the prosperous development of the global jade and jewelry market.
