Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Remains Tight, High-End Qualities See Sharp Increases, Market Faces Structural Adjustments
【Yangon/Beijing】 The global jadeite market has recently been significantly impacted by the persistent tight supply of rough stones from Myanmar. According to our latest survey of major rough stone trading markets, since March, the overall price of jadeite rough has shown a further upward trend, particularly for rare categories such as high-quality ice jade and glass jade, where the increases have been exceptionally prominent. This phenomenon not only reflects the exacerbation of supply-demand imbalance but also indicates that the global jadeite industry chain is undergoing a profound structural adjustment.
Supply Side Under Continuous Pressure, Scarcity of High-End Rough Highlighted
Since late last year, influenced by complex internal situations in Myanmar and adjustments in mining policies, among other factors, the export volume of jadeite rough has continued to shrink. Industry insiders estimate that compared to the same period in 2023, the quantity of high-quality jadeite rough entering the international market has decreased by at least 20% to 30%. Among these, the supply of rough stones reaching ice jade and glass jade grades, with appropriate size and pure color, has seen a particularly sharp decline. Professor Li Ming from the Gemology College of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) pointed out: “The formation of high-quality jadeite rough requires extremely stringent geological conditions and a long geological period; its scarcity is inherent. The current supply bottleneck in Myanmar merely presents this scarcity more directly to the market.”
Data shows that this month, the average price of ice jade and glass jade rough increased by approximately 8% to 15% month-on-month, with some exceptional pieces experiencing jumps of over 20%. In contrast, while lower-end jadeite rough, such as bean-grade and glutinous-grade, also felt the impact of the overall market sentiment, their price increases were relatively moderate, generally maintaining within a 2% to 5% range, and some lower-quality materials saw little price fluctuation.
Robust Market Demand, Enhanced Investment and Collection Attributes
Despite the persistent tight supply, global demand for jadeite, especially in the Greater China region, remains robust. With economic recovery and consumption upgrades, consumers' demand for luxury goods and artworks with value preservation and appreciation potential is growing. As a treasure of Eastern culture, jadeite's unique aesthetic appeal and profound cultural heritage make it a preferred choice for many collectors and investors.
Zhang Hua, a purchasing manager at a well-known jewelry company in Shanghai, stated: “We have clearly felt that customers' willingness to purchase high-end jadeite has not diminished; on the contrary, they are more proactive due to its scarcity. Some experienced collectors are even willing to pay a premium for high-quality rough to ensure the completeness of their collection system.” This enhancement of investment and collection attributes undoubtedly provides strong support for the price increase of high-end jadeite.
Industry Faces Both Challenges and Opportunities
In the face of the current market landscape, all segments of the jadeite industry chain are confronting new challenges and opportunities. For processing enterprises, the cost of acquiring high-quality raw materials has sharply increased, squeezing profit margins. Some small enterprises may therefore face operational difficulties. However, this also prompts the industry to focus more on design innovation and refined processing, increasing product added value to counteract rising raw material costs.
Looking ahead, Professor Li Ming predicts: “In the short term, the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is unlikely to be fundamentally alleviated. The market will show a polarized trend: high-end jadeite, due to its scarcity and investment value, will continue to be strong or even rise further; while the mid-to-low-end jadeite market may face more intense competition, with brand and design becoming key factors determining its market performance.”
At the same time, the industry is actively exploring alternative solutions, such as increasing the development and promotion of jadeite from other origins (e.g., Guatemala), and enhancing the processing and optimization levels of mid-to-low-end jadeite through technological means. However, these alternatives cannot fully compensate for the shortage of high-quality Myanmar jadeite in the short term. It is foreseeable that for some time to come, the jadeite market will continue to seek a new balance amidst the interplay of tight supply and robust demand, and the value of high-quality jadeite will be further highlighted.
