However, Hetian jade, a representative of traditional Chinese jade, after a period of consolidation, has shown strong resilience and counter-cyclical growth in its high-end exquisite market. This phenomenon has not only attracted the attention of seasoned collectors but also led more investors to re-evaluate the collection value and investment potential of Hetian jade.
According to the latest report released by the Gemological Association of China (GAC), the total transaction volume of jade nationwide reached approximately 350 billion RMB in 2023, with Hetian jade accounting for about 40% of the market share. Notably, within the total transaction volume, the trading volume of high-end Hetian jade pieces priced over one million RMB each increased by 12.5% year-on-year, while the trading volume of ordinary or lower-quality Hetian jade saw a slight decline, indicating the market's high recognition of quality and scarcity.
“We have observed that market demand for top-grade Hetian jade籽料 (seed material), especially mutton-fat jade possessing the four characteristics of 'fineness, luster, whiteness, and stickiness,' remains robust,” stated Mr. Li Ming, General Manager of Beijing Yuyuanzhai and a veteran Hetian jade connoisseur, in an interview with our publication. “For instance, a 120-gram Hetian jade seed material carving titled 'Fu Shou Shuang Quan' (Blessings and Longevity) was sold for 18 million RMB at this year’s spring auction, far exceeding its estimate. This demonstrates that truly high-end masterpieces are irreplaceable and scarce, thus capable of resisting market fluctuations.”
Geographically, first-tier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou continue to lead in Hetian jade collection and investment enthusiasm, while new first-tier cities like Hangzhou and Chengdu also show immense market potential. For example, at the 'Jiangnan Yayuan · Hetian Jade Boutique Exhibition' held in Hangzhou, the transaction volume exceeded 30 million RMB within three days, including several unique pieces valued at millions of RMB. This is attributed to the region's rich cultural heritage and growing high-net-worth population.
However, the market is not without challenges. The problem of inventory backlog for ordinary Hetian jade materials still exists, with fierce price competition. Mountain jade from certain origins, such as Qiemo and Ruoqiang in Xinjiang, due to their relatively stable output, experience smaller price fluctuations, but their investment returns are far less than those of rare seed materials. Industry experts generally believe that future Hetian jade collection and investment will become more refined and specialized.
“Investors should avoid blindly following trends and be wary of market speculation surrounding the concept of 'broadly defined Hetian jade',” warned Professor Wang from the School of Gemology at China University of Geosciences (Beijing). “True collection value lies in its jade quality, craftsmanship, cultural connotation, and historical legacy. Furthermore, Hetian jade pieces with artistic attributes crafted by renowned masters also command significant premium. For example, works by famous jade carving master Zhang Hua often fetch 20%-50% higher prices than plain jade of similar quality.”
Looking ahead, Hetian jade collection and investment will exhibit several trends: Firstly, the value of high-end seed materials and masterworks will continue to rise, serving as important safe-haven assets and vehicles for wealth inheritance. Secondly, the integration of cultural creativity with Hetian jade will become more intimate, such as cross-disciplinary fusion with traditional calligraphy, painting, and ceramics, to enhance its added value. Thirdly, the establishment of digitalization and traceability systems will further regulate the market and boost consumer confidence. Fourthly, strengthened education and popularization efforts will help improve public appreciation for Hetian jade and guide rational investment.
