【Industry Observation】

As 2024 began, China's high-end jade collection market witnessed a new wave of investment enthusiasm, with Hetian jade showing the most prominent performance. According to the latest “Q1 2024 China High-End Jade Investment Report” released by Global Jade Network, the transaction volume of the Hetian jade sector increased by 22.5% year-on-year. Notably, mutton-fat jade and river-cobble jade originating from Xinjiang's Hetian region saw the most significant gains, with some top-tier collectibles experiencing premiums of over 30%.

Scarce Resources: The Core Driver of Market Growth

“The investment value of Hetian jade primarily stems from its non-renewable scarcity,” stated Professor Li Ming, Vice President of the China Jade Culture Research Association and a renowned jade connoisseur, in an interview with our network. “Especially high-quality Hetian river-cobble jade, having been scoured and naturally selected by river water for thousands of years, its output is inherently extremely limited. In recent years, with stricter environmental policies and increased mining difficulties, truly 'old mine river-cobble jade' has become almost a rarity. The severe imbalance between supply and demand is the fundamental reason driving its continuous price increase.”

Data shows that the output of river-cobble jade in the Hetian region of Xinjiang in 2023 decreased by approximately 40% compared to five years ago. This trend continues into 2024. For instance, at the “Jade Rhyme of the East” International Jade Auction held in Shanghai last autumn, a 268-gram piece of premium Hetian mutton-fat river-cobble jade rough, with a starting price of 12 million RMB, ultimately sold for 21.5 million RMB, setting a new auction record for similar river-cobble jade in the past three years. The buyer, Mr. Wang, a veteran collector from Shenzhen, commented: “Hetian jade is not only a symbol of wealth but also a carrier of traditional Chinese culture; its future appreciation potential has far from reached its ceiling.”

Cultural Value: A Solid Guarantee for Investment Confidence

Beyond scarcity, the profound cultural heritage of Hetian jade is another significant reason attracting investors. Since ancient times, jade has played a crucial role in Chinese culture, embodying the ideal of “gentlemen comparing their virtue to jade,” and carrying beautiful meanings and spiritual sustenance. In recent years, with the rise of national cultural confidence and the resurgence of traditional culture, the cultural value of Hetian jade has been re-examined and rediscovered, further enhancing its appeal in the collection and investment fields.

“We observe that an increasing number of younger generation investors are focusing on Hetian jade,” said Ms. Zhang Hua, Market Analyst at Global Jade Network. “They not only value the material quality of Hetian jade but also the cultural stories and artistic value it embodies. Exquisitely designed, finely carved, and auspiciously symbolic modern jade carvings are also gradually becoming new market favorites. For example, a Hetian jade ornament titled ‘Prosperous Dragon Soaring,’ carved by Master Zhao, a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor, was acquired by a post-90s collector at this spring's Beijing Cultural Expo for a price far exceeding expectations. This fully demonstrates the market's recognition of the combination of cultural creativity and top-tier materials.”

Market Trends and Risk Warnings

Despite the overall positive outlook for the Hetian jade market, investors still need to remain rational. Ms. Zhang Hua cautioned: “When investing in Hetian jade, it is crucial to first focus on authenticity verification and guard against counterfeits and inferior products. Secondly, pay attention to the jade's quality, origin, carving craftsmanship, and integrity, as these are key factors affecting its value. Furthermore, market volatility still exists, and blindly following trends or pursuing short-term exorbitant profits can lead to risks. Investors are advised to choose reputable dealers and seek guidance from professionals.”

In the future, with the continuous development of China's economy and the upgrading of cultural consumption, the investment and collection market for Hetian jade is expected to maintain steady growth. The dual drivers of scarce resources and cultural value will collectively shape a new landscape for the Hetian jade market.
