In the ever-changing jade market, authenticity verification has always been a core challenge hindering industry development. Traditional authentication methods rely on expert experience, which is inefficient and susceptible to subjective factors. However, with the rapid advancement of technology, especially the deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced spectroscopic techniques, jade authentication is undergoing a revolutionary transformation, entering a more precise and efficient 'Smart Eye' era.
Recently, the 'Intelligent Multi-dimensional Spectroscopic Jade Authentication System,' jointly developed by the School of Gemology, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC), and several high-tech enterprises, has garnered widespread attention in the industry. This system integrates various advanced technologies such as Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and hyperspectral imaging, complemented by deep learning algorithms, aiming to achieve intelligent judgment of jade types, origins, enhancement treatments, and even age.
According to Dr. Zhang Hua, Director of the NGTC Laboratory, the system has achieved an authentication accuracy rate of over 97% for mainstream jades such as Hetian jade, jadeite, and Dushan jade. Particularly in distinguishing natural A-grade jadeite from B and C grades (acid-washed, resin-filled, and dyed), its accuracy rate reaches an impressive 99.2%. This represents a qualitative leap compared to traditional visual inspection and conventional instrumental testing. Dr. Zhang stated in an interview with 'Global Jade Network': 'By establishing a vast spectroscopic database of jade, covering tens of thousands of jade samples from different origins and with various treatment methods, and utilizing AI for deep learning and pattern recognition on this data, we have endowed the machine with a 'smart eye' almost akin to human experts.'
Taking Hetian jade as an example, the system can accurately distinguish between Russian jade, Qinghai jade, and Xinjiang Hetian jade by analyzing the content ratios of trace elements and structural characteristics within the jade. For instance, Russian jade often contains a higher proportion of diopside, while Xinjiang Hetian jade is primarily tremolite; these subtle mineral composition differences manifest as distinct characteristic peaks in the spectroscopic graphs. In jadeite authentication, hyperspectral imaging technology can capture microscopic structures and dye distributions imperceptible to the human eye, and combined with AI algorithms, it can quickly determine the presence of resin filling, dyeing, and other enhancement treatments.
Furthermore, 'JadeSight Technology' company, based in Shenzhen, has also launched a jade traceability and authentication platform based on blockchain technology and AI image recognition. This platform creates 3D models and identifies characteristic points of jade, binding them to a unique ID on the blockchain, thereby achieving full lifecycle traceability of jade from rough stone mining to finished product sales. Li Ming, CEO of the company, stated: 'We have partnered with numerous jade processing enterprises in places like Ruili, Yunnan, and Jieyang, Guangdong. It is estimated that over 100,000 jade products will undergo digital certification and authentication through our platform this year, effectively combating counterfeit and shoddy products.'
However, the widespread adoption of new technologies is not without its challenges. High equipment costs, a shortage of professional talent, and issues with the uniformity of industry standards are all practical obstacles. Liu Yan, Vice President of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China, pointed out: 'While technological progress is exciting, how to transform these high-precision technologies into universally applicable industry tools, lower the barrier to entry, and establish unified international authentication standards will be key challenges to overcome in the coming years.'
Despite the existing challenges, the application prospects of AI and spectroscopic technologies in jade authentication are undoubtedly bright. It will not only enhance the objectivity and accuracy of authentication, protecting consumer rights, but also empower the healthy development of the entire jade industry chain, injecting new vitality into the millennia-old jade culture.
