Having been fascinated by ancient jade for many years, every time I touch those warm and moist artifacts, I feel as if I can travel through time and converse with the ancients. In the vast river of jade culture, Henan jade carving is undoubtedly a brilliant pearl. It not only carries the profound heritage of Central Plains civilization but also, with its unique 'Henan Gong' craftsmanship, writes immortal legends.

Tracing the history of Henan jade carving, we must go back to the distant Stone Age. As early as the Neolithic Age, in the sites of Peiligang and Yangshao cultures, a large number of exquisite jade artifacts have been unearthed, such as jade huang and jade jue from the Jiahu site in Wuyang. Their shapes are simple and ancient, lines are smooth, demonstrating the ancestors' initial understanding of jade and their exquisite skills. Although these early jade articles are not as finely carved as those seen today, they already laid the aesthetic foundation of Henan jade carving—revering nature and pursuing spiritual charm. By the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, as the center of the dynasty, Henan's jade articles were endowed with the lofty status of ritual and sacrifice. The jade artifacts unearthed from the Fu Hao tomb at Yinxu in Anyang are astonishing in their vast quantity, rich variety, and exquisite craftsmanship. Among them are jade dragons, jade phoenixes, and jade figures, carved with diverse techniques such as relief, round carving, and openwork carving. The lines are strong and powerful, and the shapes are vivid and lifelike, fully demonstrating the peak achievements of Shang Dynasty jade carving. These jade articles were not only symbols of power but also mediums for communicating with heaven and earth, embodying the ancients' profound understanding of the universe and life.

The essence of 'Henan Gong' lies in its deep cultural accumulation and unique regional style. It is not as elegant and delicate as Yangzhou Gong, nor as exquisite and translucent as Suzhou Gong, nor as magnificent and grand as Beijing Gong. Henan jade carving, especially Nanyang Dushan jade carving, is renowned for its grand scale, ancient elegance, and clever use of contrasting colors. Dushan jade is colorful, with various shades of green, white, yellow, purple, and black, which provides vast creative space for jade carvers. Skilled Henan jade carvers often 'carve according to the material and cleverly use contrasting colors,' subtly integrating the natural colors of the jade into the design, making the work more vibrant. For example, if a piece of jade has both red and green colors, the artisan might carve it into a 'red flower and green leaf' pattern, appearing natural and full of charm. This respect for and mastery of jade material is precisely the charm of 'Henan Gong'.

I once had the privilege of visiting an old jade carving artisan in Nanyang. He told me that true 'Henan Gong' is not just a skill, but a 'mind method.' The 'mind method' is about reverence for jade, inheritance of tradition, and pursuit of innovation. He pointed to a Dushan jade ornament he was carving, on which a partial scene of 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival' was vividly carved, with numerous figures and intricate details, yet well-arranged and lifelike. He said: "This jade, it tells me what it wants to be. I just help it show its inner beauty." This sentence gave me a deeper understanding of 'Henan Gong': it is an art of dialogue with jade, a realm where the spiritual essence of heaven and earth merges with the ingenuity of the artisan.

In modern times, Henan jade carving has not stopped at tradition. While inheriting ancient techniques, new generations of Henan jade carvers are also actively exploring innovation. They combine modern aesthetic concepts with traditional elements, creating batches of jade carving works that possess both national characteristics and contemporary appeal. For example, combining Dushan jade with modern sculpture art to create abstract and philosophical artworks; or deconstructing and reinterpreting traditional themes, endowing them with new connotations. In various jade carving exhibitions, Henan jade carving works have repeatedly won awards, not only demonstrating their profound cultural heritage but also showcasing their vitality and potential in the field of contemporary art. These works are not only exquisite artworks but also embodiments of the Chinese nation's cultural confidence, telling the world an ancient yet vibrant story of the Central Plains.

Jade has spirit, and Henan jade carving even more so. It carries the historical memory of the Central Plains and embodies the wisdom and sweat of generations of artisans. From ancient ritual objects to modern art treasures, Henan jade carving has always, with its unique charm, narrated the continuous flow of Chinese civilization. As an ancient jade collector, I deeply understand that every piece of 'Henan Gong' jade is a silent history book, waiting for us to interpret, inherit, and carry forward. It is not just a stone, but the concretization of the Chinese national spirit, a bridge connecting the past and the future.
