Hey sisters, how are you all doing? I'm your old friend Xiao Wang, a jadeite collector who has been in the jadeite circle for over a decade, starting from a novice to now having some insights. Today, let's not talk about anything else, but the 'soul' of jadeite bracelets – 'Zhongshui'! 💎
Every time I see sisters confused about 'Ice Jade', 'Glutinous Jade', and 'Bean Jade' when buying bracelets, I feel it's necessary to give everyone a good科普 (popular science) lesson. After all, 'Zhongshui' is one of the core factors determining the value of jadeite. Understanding it will enable you to truly buy treasures that are worth or even exceed their value! ✨
What are 'Zhong' and 'Shui' in Jadeite?
Simply put, 'Zhong' refers to the fineness of the jadeite's structure and the size of its crystal grains. It determines the jadeite's hardness, density, and luster. And 'Shui', also known as 'Shuitou' (water head), refers to the jadeite's transparency and light penetration ability. The two complement each other, jointly forming the 'Zhongshui' of jadeite.
1. The 'Zhong' of Jadeite: From Coarse to Fine, Value Soars! 🚀
* Bean Jade (Dòu Zhǒng): This is the most common type of jadeite, with coarse crystal grains visible to the naked eye, just like cooked beans. Its transparency is usually not high, and its luster is relatively weak. Most jadeite bracelets on the market are Bean Jade, and the price is relatively affordable. When I first started, I also bought a few Bean Jade bracelets for practice. Although I don't wear them now, they witnessed the beginning of my learning. 😉
* Glutinous Jade (Nuò Zhǒng): Finer than Bean Jade, with indistinct crystal graininess, appearing like cooked glutinous rice soup, semi-transparent or slightly transparent. Glutinous Jade is further divided into 'Nuohua Zhong' (glutinous transformation jade) and 'Bingnuo Zhong' (ice glutinous jade). 'Nuohua Zhong' has a more uniform texture, while 'Bingnuo Zhong' has an icy feel and higher transparency. I personally think 'Bingnuo Zhong' is a very cost-effective choice, as it has good texture and a moderate price. A 'Bingnuo Zhong' bracelet with a floating flower pattern that I collected is warm and elegant to wear, making it my first choice for daily wear.
* Ice Jade (Bīng Zhǒng): Wow, talking about Ice Jade is exciting! Its texture is extremely fine, with crystal grains almost invisible, clear and transparent like ice cubes, giving a pure and ethereal feeling. Its light penetration is extremely strong, presenting a glassy luster. The value of Ice Jade is already very high, and a good Ice Jade bracelet on the market can easily cost tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands. I once saw an exquisite Ice Jade bracelet at an auction, glowing all over, it was simply breathtakingly beautiful! 😍
* Glass Jade (Bō Lí Zhǒng): The king of jadeite! Its texture is extremely fine, with crystal grains completely invisible, and its transparency reaches the highest level, as clear and transparent as glass, even allowing you to see the fibrous structure inside the bracelet. Glass Jade often comes with 'Qi Ying' (glowing) and 'Qi Jiao' (gelling) phenomena, where light flows within it as if alive. This level of jadeite bracelet is rare and highly sought after, and its price is astronomical! If you can encounter one, it is definitely a collectible treasure! 🤩
2. The 'Shui' of Jadeite: Light Penetration, Full of Spirit! ✨
'Shuitou' is inextricably linked with 'Zhong'. Generally speaking, the older the 'Zhong' (the finer), the better the 'Shuitou'. Jadeite with good 'Shuitou' allows light to penetrate deeper, making it appear more spiritual, and its color can be better displayed. Imagine a jadeite with a very pure color but poor 'Shuitou', the color will appear dull; while a jadeite with good 'Shuitou', even if the color is not so rich, will appear lively and vibrant.
Xiao Wang Teaches You How to Identify 'Zhongshui' at a Glance? 👀
- Look at the luster: Good 'Zhongshui' has a strong surface luster, reflecting light like glass. Poor 'Zhongshui' has a weak luster, even somewhat waxy.
- Look at the transparency: Place it in a well-lit place and observe how deep the light can penetrate. Glass Jade is almost completely transparent, Ice Jade is semi-transparent, Glutinous Jade is slightly transparent, and Bean Jade is basically opaque.
- Look at the crystal grains: Use a magnifying glass (or observe carefully with the naked eye) to see if the crystal grains are clearly visible. The smaller and finer the grains, the better the 'Zhong'.
- Feel for 'Qi Ying' and 'Qi Jiao': These are unique phenomena of high 'Zhongshui' jadeite. 'Qi Ying' refers to the fluorescence effect formed by light refraction inside the jadeite, as if light is flowing within it; 'Qi Jiao' refers to the jadeite's texture being so fine that it resembles jelly, with a sense of stagnation. These two phenomena are important indicators for judging high-quality goods!
My Personal Experience Sharing:
When buying a jadeite bracelet, in addition to 'Zhongshui', color, cracks, shape, and inner diameter size are also very important. But if your budget is limited, I recommend prioritizing good 'Zhongshui'. Because 'Zhongshui' is the 'skeleton' of jadeite. With a good skeleton, even if the color is not top-notch, the overall piece will appear very high-grade. I once encountered a bracelet with a very ordinary color but an Ice Jade 'Zhongshui'. The clear and vibrant feeling it gave when worn was far more attractive than a bracelet with rich color but poor 'Zhongshui'.
To summarize:
The 'Zhongshui' of jadeite is the cornerstone of its value. From Bean Jade to Glutinous Jade, and then to Ice Jade and Glass Jade, each upgrade in grade brings a qualitative leap in value. I hope today's sharing can help sisters no longer be confused when buying jadeite bracelets, and choose their favorite and valuable treasures! 💖
