Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Wang, and I've been playing with jade for decades. From my initial ignorance to my current obsession, I've truly forged an indissoluble bond with jade. Today, I want to talk to you about a seemingly simple yet crucial aspect of collecting: the storage and display of jade, especially how to protect it from moisture and sun. This is no small matter. A good piece of jade, if stored improperly, can lose its luster at best, or crack and deteriorate at worst, which is truly heartbreaking.

Setting the Scene:
I remember when I first started, I acquired a piece of Hetian seed jade. I loved it so much that I casually placed it on the windowsill in my study, thinking I could play with it anytime. As a result, not long after, that originally warm and moist seed jade became somewhat dry, and even faintly showed a few tiny 'water lines'. I was frantic at the time and quickly consulted an expert, only to learn that direct sunlight and dry air were the culprits. From then on, I prioritized moisture and sun protection in jade maintenance.

Core Techniques: Moisture and Sun Protection, Dual Approach

1. Sun Protection: Avoiding Light is Key, Stay Away from Heat Sources

* Avoid direct sunlight: This is the most basic and most important principle. Jade, especially nephrite, when exposed to strong sunlight for a long time, will accelerate the evaporation of its internal moisture, leading to the jade becoming dry, its luster diminishing, and even 'dehydration', making the surface rough and the color faded. I usually keep my collection in cabinets not directly exposed to sunlight, or use display cases with UV protection. I have a friend whose study has floor-to-ceiling windows; he specially customized a display cabinet with blackout curtains. He keeps them closed normally and only opens them when appreciating the jade, which is very thoughtful.
* Stay away from heat sources: In addition to sunlight, heat sources such as radiators, spotlights, and stoves can also damage jade. High temperatures also accelerate the loss of internal moisture in jade, and may even cause changes in the internal structure of the jade, leading to cracking. My experience is that the area where jade is stored should maintain a relatively stable temperature, avoiding sudden changes between hot and cold. For example, in winter, I move jade away from radiators to a relatively cool room.
* Use opaque cloth or boxes: For jade pieces that are not frequently displayed, I recommend wrapping them in soft cotton cloth and placing them in wooden or brocade boxes. These boxes not only prevent dust but also effectively block light, providing a relatively stable micro-environment.

2. Moisture Protection: Moderate Humidity, Regular Inspection

* Maintain appropriate humidity: Many people only know about sun protection but overlook moisture protection. In fact, an excessively humid environment is also harmful to jade. High air humidity makes it easy for dust to adhere to the jade surface and even grow mold, affecting its beauty and texture. But it should not be too dry, otherwise it will also lead to dehydration. My experience is that indoor humidity between 50%-70% is ideal. During humid seasons, I use a dehumidifier or place desiccants in the storage cabinet (but avoid direct contact between the desiccant and the jade).
* Ventilation: Regularly take out the jade and let it 'breathe' fresh air, which helps maintain its internal stability. However, be careful to avoid strong drafts during ventilation to prevent dust from adhering.
* Separate storage, avoid odor transfer: Different jade pieces, especially those with fragrant wood or spices, should not be placed together with jade for a long time, to prevent the jade from absorbing odors. I usually prepare separate storage spaces for each piece of jade, or wrap them individually with clean soft cloth.
* Regular cleaning and handling: Moderate handling is the best maintenance. The oils and sweat secreted by human skin, during the handling process, will penetrate the surface of the jade, forming a natural protective film, making it more warm and lustrous. But be sure to wash your hands before handling, to avoid grease, cosmetics, etc., staining the jade. When cleaning, gently wipe with a soft, clean cloth; never use chemical cleaners.

Precautions:

* Avoid friction with other hard objects: Whether storing or displaying, ensure that the jade does not collide or rub against other hard objects, to avoid scratches or bumps.
* Regular inspection: Develop the habit of regularly inspecting your collection, observing the condition of the jade, and taking timely measures if any abnormalities are found.
* Documentation: For precious collections, I recommend keeping good records, including purchase time, place, jade characteristics, maintenance status, etc., which is very helpful for long-term collection.

Summary of Experience:
Jade has life, and it needs our careful care. Moisture and sun protection are not just physical protection, but also a respect and inheritance of jade culture. Remember, the best maintenance is meticulousness, patience, and perseverance. May all your beloved jade pieces shine brightly and be passed down through generations!
