Hello everyone, fellow collectors! I'm Old Wang, a collections manager who has been dealing with Hetian jade for most of my life. Over the years, I've handled countless pieces of jade, from籽料 (seed jade) to山料 (mountain jade), from hand pieces to display items. I deeply understand that for a good piece of jade, in addition to its inherent quality, subsequent maintenance is the key to whether it can glow with warmth and be passed down through generations. Today, I'd like to share with you some of the practical Hetian jade maintenance tips I've learned over the years. I hope they can help your beloved jade become more lustrous and beautiful with proper care.

Setting the Scene:

I remember when I first started in this field, I had a superficial understanding of jade maintenance, only knowing not to bump it. Once, a perfectly conditioned Hetian jade seed piece, because I was lazy, I placed it directly on a windowsill exposed to direct sunlight. Before long, the jade quality appeared somewhat dry and lost its original oily luster. At that time, I was so regretful, feeling as if I had lost my soul. From then on, I was determined to thoroughly understand the ins and outs of jade maintenance. After decades of practice and learning, I have summarized a set of effective "Three Avoidances and Three Diligences" maintenance methods.

Core Techniques:

I. Three Avoidances: Avoid High Temperatures, Avoid Chemicals, Avoid Bumps

  • Avoid High Temperatures: Hetian jade is most afraid of dryness and high temperatures. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or proximity to heat sources (such as radiators, stoves) will cause changes in the molecular structure inside the jade, leading to water loss, making it dry, dull, and even developing tiny cracks. My experience is that when wearing jade in summer, try to avoid prolonged sun exposure outdoors; in winter, with indoor heating, remember not to place jade on or near radiators. I usually store my un-worn jade pieces in a constant temperature and humidity wooden box, with a small cup of water inside to maintain a certain level of humidity.

  • Avoid Chemicals: In daily life, perfumes, cosmetics, detergents, etc., all contain chemical components that are highly corrosive to Hetian jade. These substances will erode the surface of the jade, causing it to lose its original luster and even leave hard-to-remove stains. Therefore, when I bathe, wash dishes, do housework, or use cosmetics and perfumes, I always take off my jade pieces first. This is a small habit, but it plays a significant role in protecting the jade.

  • Avoid Bumps: Although jade has high hardness, its toughness is relatively poor, and it is prone to cracks or even breakage when subjected to external impact. I once saw a priceless Hetian jade bracelet that broke into two pieces instantly because the owner accidentally dropped it, which was a great pity. Therefore, be extra careful when wearing jade, avoiding strenuous exercise. When not wearing it, it's best to store it separately in a soft cloth bag or jewelry box to avoid friction with other hard objects.

II. Three Diligences: Diligent Playing, Diligent Cleaning, Diligent Checking

  • Diligent Playing: The saying "people nourish jade, jade nourishes people" is not without reason. Frequent wearing and playing with Hetian jade allows the oils and sweat secreted by the human body to slowly penetrate into the jade, forming a patina that makes the jade more oily and lustrous. However, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before playing to avoid dirt and dust from adhering to the jade surface. Every day, I take time to gently wipe my hand pieces with a clean cotton cloth, then slowly rub them with my hands, feeling the warmth of the jade.

  • Diligent Cleaning: Even with the utmost care, the surface of jade will inevitably accumulate dust and dirt. Regular cleaning is key to maintaining the jade's luster. My method is to soak the jade in clean water (preferably purified or distilled water) for a few minutes, then gently scrub it with a soft brush (like a toothbrush), especially in the carved crevices. After cleaning, simply wipe it dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth. Remember not to use any chemical cleaning agents.

  • Diligent Checking: Developing the habit of regularly checking your jade can help you discover and address potential problems in a timely manner. For example, check for new cracks, signs of bumps, or loose knots in the string. Once a problem is found, take immediate action, such as replacing the string or seeking professional repair, to prevent small problems from escalating into major ones.

True Case:

A friend of mine had a family heirloom Hetian jade plaque that, due to the nature of his work, required frequent business trips, so the jade plaque was always left at home. One time he returned and found the jade plaque's surface was somewhat dull. I checked it for him and found that it was caused by long-term placement in a dry environment without regular playing and cleaning. I advised him to clean it with water daily, then wipe it dry with a clean cotton cloth, and then gently play with it by hand. After more than half a year, the jade plaque regained its former oily luster, and even became more warm and moist than before. This is the best embodiment of "people nourishing jade."

Summary of Experience:

Hetian jade maintenance, in the end, is about meticulousness and patience. It's not an overnight success but a cumulative effort. Treat it like a living friend, and it will naturally reward you with its warm luster and unique charm. Remember my "Three Avoidances and Three Diligences" mantra, and persevere; your Hetian jade will surely become more beautiful with care, a dazzling landscape in your hands. I hope my experience can be helpful to everyone, and I wish all fellow collectors' beloved jade pieces radiate with brilliance!
