Hey sisters! 👋 I'm your Jade Investment Notes, and today we're going to talk about a topic that countless jade enthusiasts both love and hate – jade identification! Are you always worried about buying a fake when you see a beloved piece? Don't worry, today I'm going to share all my 'fiery eye' secrets so you can navigate the world of jade with ease and stop being a 'leek'! 🌿
🎯 Why is identification so important?
I remember when I first started, I made a lot of mistakes. Once, I saw a 'Hotan jade pebble' that the seller praised to the skies, and the price was 'beautiful'. But when I took it back to an expert, it turned out to be a river jade pretending to be Hotan jade! Although river jade also has value, compared to pebble jade, it's a world of difference. That single mistake cost me a five-figure sum! 💸 Since then, I decided that I must thoroughly learn identification! This is not only about protecting my wallet but also about respecting jade culture.
🔍 Professional Identification, Starting with These Points:
- Look at the 'Skin Color': This is the 'ID card' of pebble jade! The skin color of real Hotan jade pebbles is naturally formed, with natural color transitions, varying depths, and obvious pores. When you touch it, you'll feel a sandy 'hair follicle' sensation. What about fake skin? It's often too bright, uniform in color, lacks natural transitions, and sometimes even shows traces of artificial dyeing. My personal experience is that when observed with a 10x magnifying glass, real skin pores contain tiny mineral particles, while fake skin often has dye accumulation. 📸
- Observe the 'Structure': The internal structure of jade is its 'DNA'. The typical structure of Hotan jade is a 'felt-like interwoven structure,' which we often call 'waxy' or 'fleshy'. Under transmitted light, you can see interwoven fibers inside, like a ball of cotton. Some imitations, such as quartzite jade, have a strong granular structure and good light transmission but lack that warm 'waxy' feel. I usually use a strong flashlight to illuminate from different angles, carefully observing the internal structural patterns of the jade. Remember, the finer and more uniform the structure, the better the jade quality! 💡
- Listen to the 'Sound': This is a more advanced technique that requires a lot of practice. Gently tap two pieces of genuine jade of similar size and pure texture, and they will emit a crisp, pleasant, and lingering sound, like wind chimes. Inferior or fake jade, on the other hand, will produce a dull, short sound. I once saw an old expert in the jade market who, without even looking, could roughly determine the authenticity and quality of jade just by gently tapping two pieces together – it was amazing! 👂
- Measure 'Density': The density of jade is one of its physical properties. The density of Hotan jade is approximately between 2.95-3.17 g/cm³. Although it's difficult for ordinary people to measure precisely, we can make a preliminary judgment by feel. Real jade feels heavy in the hand, with a 'weighty' sensation. Many light 'jades' are mostly fakes. I usually carry a small electronic scale with me, and if I'm particularly suspicious, I'll borrow the seller's tools to quickly measure the weight and volume to estimate the density. ⚖️
- Look at the 'Luster': The luster of real jade is a warm oily luster or waxy luster, not a glass luster. This luster is determined by the internal structure and mineral composition of the jade, giving it a subtle and understated beauty. The luster of fake jade is often too dazzling or dull. I often observe jade in natural light to feel the changes in its luster. ☀️
💡 My Little Tips:
* Look More, Buy Less: This is my advice to all novices! Learn first, then buy. Visit museums and professional jade stores more often to see genuine pieces and experience the charm of real jade.
* Befriend Experts: Learn from experienced masters; their knowledge is invaluable. I slowly found my way by following an old jade carving master.
* Don't Be Greedy for Small Bargains: Remember, there's no free lunch, especially in the jade industry. Be wary of prices far below market value!
* Professional Testing: If it's a valuable piece of jade, be sure to send it to a professional jewelry and jade testing institution for a certificate. This is the most reliable guarantee! ✅
