Jadeite Auction Market 'Spring Blooms': High-End Jadeite Soars Against Trends, Hetian Jade Shows Promising Potential

【Industry Observation】

In the first half of 2024, the global jadeite auction market presented a remarkable 'spring bloom' scenario. Despite multiple macroeconomic challenges, high-end jadeite and some exquisite Hetian jade lots demonstrated strong resilience and appreciation potential, becoming a bright spot in the art investment sector. According to recently released data, the total transaction value of jadeite lots across major global auction houses (including Sotheby's, Christie's, and prominent domestic auction companies like Beijing Poly and China Guardian) reached an astonishing $275 million, an increase of 8.5% compared to the same period last year.

High-End Jadeite: A Perfect Blend of Rarity and Collectible Value

In this market analysis, high-end jadeite undoubtedly stands out as the biggest highlight. Especially those Imperial Green, Glassy-type, and Icy-type jadeite pieces with excellent transparency, pure color, and exquisite craftsmanship, have repeatedly set new records in auction prices. For instance, at Sotheby's Hong Kong Spring Sale in May this year, a natural Imperial Green jadeite bead necklace named 'Heaven-Sent Blessing' was sold for a staggering HKD 120 million (approximately USD 15.3 million), far exceeding its pre-sale estimate. According to Mr. Wen Dehua, Head of Jewellery, Asia, Sotheby's: “The rarity, perfection, and historical provenance of this necklace made it a focal point for collectors. Globally, jadeite of this caliber is truly a rarity.”

Ms. Chen Lihua, Vice President, Asia, and International Specialist, Jewellery and Jadeite, Christie's, also noted that in recent years, buyers' understanding of jadeite has continuously improved. They are no longer solely focused on carat size but pay more attention to its overall artistic value and cultural connotations. She mentioned that at China Guardian's Shanghai Spring Sale in April, an 'Abundance and Longevity' icy-type jadeite carving, crafted by renowned jade carving master Li Gang, fetched RMB 35 million, setting a new auction record for contemporary jade carving artworks.

Hetian Jade Market: Structural Differentiation and the Rise of Exquisite Pieces

In contrast to the overall robust jadeite market, the Hetian jade market exhibited a more complex structural differentiation. Generally, the market for ordinary quality Hetian jade performed modestly, even experiencing a slight decline. However, 'seed material' (籽料, zǐliào) originating from the Hetian region of Xinjiang, known for its fine texture, high oiliness, and natural skin color, especially those with unique historical provenance or master craftsmanship, showed exceptionally strong market performance.

According to a report released by Beijing Poly Auction House, in the first half of 2024, the transaction value of high-quality Hetian jade seed material increased by 12% year-on-year, including numerous pieces sold for millions or even tens of millions of RMB. For example, at Beijing Poly's Spring Sale in June, a 120-gram 'Mutton Fat Jade Seed Stone' was sold for RMB 8.8 million, its pure jade quality and perfect skin color were astonishing. Wang Ming, General Manager of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy & Antiquities and Curiosities Department at Poly Auction, stated: “The entry barrier for collecting Hetian jade is relatively high, and buyers place more emphasis on its origin, jade quality, and rarity. As the knowledge level of collectors increases, the value of exquisite Hetian jade will be further highlighted.”

Market Trends and Future Outlook

Based on the auction data and market feedback, the jadeite auction market exhibits the following significant trends:

    • Rarity-driven: Whether it's high-end jadeite or exquisite Hetian jade, the core of their value lies in resource scarcity. As high-quality mineral resources are increasingly depleted, the value preservation and appreciation attributes of high-quality jade will become more prominent.

    • Emphasis on Cultural and Artistic Value: Investors and collectors are no longer solely focused on the material itself but pay more attention to the cultural stories, historical provenance, and the unique skills of the carving artists behind it.

    • Digital Technology Empowerment: The application of digital technologies such as online auctions and VR/AR exhibitions has broadened the audience for jadeite auctions and enhanced the convenience and transparency of transactions. For instance, online bidding through China Guardian's official APP contributed 15% of the total transaction value in its spring sale this year.

    • Younger Buyers Entering the Market: An increasing number of younger generation collectors are beginning to pay attention to jade investment. Their aesthetics and choices for jade are more diversified, injecting new vitality into the market.

Looking ahead, the jadeite auction market is expected to continue its steady growth. Experts predict that driven by global economic recovery and the wealth allocation needs of high-net-worth individuals, the investment value of high-end jade will further increase. At the same time, with the strengthening of consumers' cultural identity with jade and the continuous improvement of industry regulation, a healthier and more transparent jadeite auction market will gradually take shape. We have reason to believe that jade, this oriental treasure, will shine even brighter in the global art market.
