Don't worry! Today I'm sharing my private 'treasure-identifying arsenal' with you, so you can also become a jade expert with keen eyes! 👀

I remember when I first started getting into jade, I also paid a lot of 'tuition fees.' Once, I fell in love with a particularly beautiful 'Hetian jade,' and the seller swore it was a seed material. But when I shone a flashlight on it at home, it immediately revealed its true colors—a typical Russian material masquerading as seed material. 💔 From then on, I was determined to learn identification knowledge, and tools are our best helpers!

🔍 Essential Jade Identification Tools for Beginners

1. Strong Flashlight (Highly Recommended! 🌟)
* Importance: 100 points! This is my most frequently used tool, bar none. It allows you to see the internal structure, flaws, cracks, and most crucially—the 'structural luster' of the jade.
* Selection Advice: I recommend choosing an LED strong flashlight with a brightness of 3W-5W, preferably with switchable white and yellow light. White light provides clearer structural observation, while yellow light is better for observing the color and oiliness of the jade. I personally prefer compact, portable ones with zoom functionality, which are convenient for focusing and diffusing light to observe different parts.
* Usage Tips: Place the flashlight tightly against the jade surface, and shine light from different angles to observe the internal structure. Natural Hetian jade usually exhibits a 'fibrous intergrowth structure,' where fine cotton-like or felt-like structures can be seen under strong light. Some imitations, such as glass or marble, will appear translucent without structure or with a granular structure.

2. Magnifying Glass (60x or 100x)
* Importance: 90 points! The flashlight is for overall viewing, while the magnifying glass is a 'microscope' for details.
* Selection Advice: I recommend choosing a 60x or 100x magnifying glass with a light source, especially those that can clip onto a phone camera, making it convenient for taking photos and recording. 🔍
* Usage Tips: Mainly used to observe polishing marks, acid etch marks, glue filling marks, and internal inclusions and fissures on the jade surface. For example, B-grade jadeite often shows reticulated acid etch marks and glue bubbles under a magnifying glass. The 'fly wings' (cui xing) of natural jadeite will also be more apparent under magnification.

3. Vernier Caliper/Electronic Scale
* Importance: 80 points! Used to measure the size and weight of jade, combined with density calculation, it's an important basis for judging the material.
* Selection Advice: High-precision electronic vernier calipers and gram scales. ⚖️
* Usage Tips: Measure the length, width, and height of the jade, then weigh it. Then calculate using the formula Density = Mass ÷ Volume. The density range of different jades is relatively fixed; for example, Hetian jade's density is approximately 2.95-3.17 g/cm³, and jadeite's is 3.30-3.38 g/cm³. If the measured data deviates significantly, be alert!

4. Refractometer (Advanced Tool, Not Essential but Professional)
* Importance: 70 points! This might be a bit advanced for beginners, but if you want to be more professional, it's a good investment.
* Selection Advice: Purchase a professional gemstone refractometer to measure the refractive index of jade.
* Usage Tips: Each gemstone has its specific refractive index range. For example, jadeite's refractive index is about 1.66, and Hetian jade's is about 1.61. By measuring the refractive index, you can more accurately determine the type of jade.

5. UV Fluorescent Lamp (Auxiliary Tool)
* Importance: 60 points! Primarily used to detect whether jade has been dyed, glued, or otherwise treated.
* Selection Advice: A fluorescent lamp that can switch between shortwave and longwave UV light.
* Usage Tips: Place the jade under the UV lamp for observation. Some jadeite treated with glue (B-grade) will fluoresce under shortwave UV light. Natural jade usually does not fluoresce or only has a faint fluorescence.
