Industry Observation
In 2024, after enduring the challenges of the pandemic, the global jade and jewelry industry is experiencing a robust recovery. Various international jewelry exhibitions and industry events are not only serving as crucial bridges connecting global jade merchants, designers, collectors, and consumers, but also as vital indicators for discerning market trends and seizing future opportunities. This year, the successful hosting of a series of pivotal exhibitions, from Hong Kong to Las Vegas, and from Shanghai to Dubai, has undoubtedly injected new vitality into the industry.
Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair: Consolidating Asia's Core Position
As one of Asia's, and indeed the world's, most influential jewelry events, the 'Hong Kong International Jewellery Show' and the 'Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show', held in March 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, once again demonstrated their irreplaceable status. According to data from the organizer, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), this year's exhibitions attracted over 4,000 exhibitors from 44 countries and regions, and welcomed more than 80,000 professional buyers, with approximately 60% coming from overseas. Notably, the number of jade exhibitors increased by 15% compared to 2023, with booth areas for Burmese jadeite and Xinjiang Hetian jade both expanding. Mr. Chan Chi-cheong, Chairman of the Hong Kong Jade Merchants Association, stated: 'The Hong Kong exhibition is a barometer for global jade trade. This year, we observed strong demand for high-quality jadeite and Hetian jade from mainland China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, with customized and design-centric jade jewelry being particularly popular.'
JCK Las Vegas Show: North American Consumer Power Highlighted
The JCK Las Vegas Show, held in May 2024, as North America's largest jewelry event, also achieved significant results. According to Reed Exhibitions, the organizer, the show attracted over 30,000 industry professionals and featured more than 2,300 exhibiting brands. In the jade sector, jade-inlaid jewelry from Canadian, Mexican, and local US designers garnered attention from younger consumer groups with their unique modern design styles. Clement Sabbagh, President of the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA), pointed out that the North American market's increasing focus on 'responsible sourcing' and 'sustainability' for jade products is prompting more jade suppliers to prioritize supply chain transparency.
China International Jewellery Fair: Immense Potential in Domestic Consumer Market
The 'China International Jewellery Fair', held in Beijing in September and Shanghai in November 2024, once again confirmed China's potential as the world's largest jade consumer market. The Gem & Jewelry Trade Association of China (GAC) reported that the two fairs collectively attracted over 500,000 visitors, with transaction volumes exceeding 10 billion RMB. Traditional jade categories such as Hetian jade, jadeite, and Nanhong agate continued to dominate, but creative jade products combining traditional and modern elements, introduced by young designer brands, saw a 25% year-on-year increase in sales. Dr. He Qiang, Professor at the Gemological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and a renowned jade appraisal expert, emphasized during a forum at the exhibition: 'The Chinese jade market is transitioning from focusing on 'material' to 'craftsmanship' and 'culture'. Consumers are increasingly recognizing the cultural connotations and artistic value of jade.'
Middle East and European Markets: Emerging Growth Points and Cultural Fusion
The 'Dubai International Jewellery Show' in January 2024 and the 'Vicenzaoro' exhibition in Vicenza, Italy, in September, also showcased the diversified development of jade globally. The Dubai show attracted a large number of affluent Middle Eastern buyers who showed strong interest in high-quality jadeite, nephrite, and other jades, especially jade carvings and jewelry with Islamic art influences. The Vicenzaoro show, on the other hand, focused more on the integration of jade with traditional European jewelry craftsmanship, demonstrating the possibilities of jade in high-end bespoke jewelry. Dr. Elena Rossi, a researcher at GIA Europe, noted that awareness of jade is growing in the European market, particularly for jades with unique historical backgrounds and cultural narratives, which are more likely to attract collectors.
Challenges and Opportunities Coexist
Despite the recovering trend in the global jade and jewelry market, challenges remain. Geopolitical uncertainties, fluctuating raw material prices, and rapidly changing consumer preferences all pose new demands on the industry. However, digital transformation, sustainable development, and personalized customization also present unprecedented opportunities for the jade industry. Through exhibition platforms, industry participants can better exchange experiences, collectively address challenges, and seize a new cycle of growth.
Looking ahead, with the continued global economic recovery and renewed consumer confidence, jade and jewelry exhibitions will continue to play their irreplaceable role, leading the industry towards a more prosperous future.
