Hello everyone, I'm Liu Si Yuan. Having dedicated over two decades to the jade industry, evolving from an apprentice appraiser to an investment consultant, I've personally witnessed the market's ebbs and flows and observed countless collectors' joys and regrets. Today, I want to share my latest insights on jade investment, hoping to provide guidance in this complex and ever-changing market.

I. Upholding Traditional Value with Innovation: The "New Normal" for Hetian Jade

For a long time, Hetian jade, with its warm and subtle luster, and profound cultural heritage, has been highly revered as a "hard currency" in jade investment. However, in recent years, with declining mining yields and a cooling of market speculation, prices for high-quality Hetian jade have stabilized, and even experienced localized corrections. Does this signify the end of Hetian jade's golden investment era?

My answer is: No. This precisely indicates that Hetian jade investment is entering a "new normal." The past investment model of blindly chasing high prices and solely focusing on origin is outdated. Now, we should pay more attention to its comprehensive value, encompassing "texture, craftsmanship, and cultural connotation."

For example, I once advised a client that instead of spending a large sum on a mediocre quality river pebble (籽料), it would be better to choose a high-quality mountain material (山料) piece with exquisite carving and auspicious symbolism. The latter not only possesses superior artistic value but also holds higher appreciation potential due to its rarity and cultural added value. As it turned out, this mountain material piece doubled in value within just three years.

Furthermore, the aesthetic preferences of the younger generation for jade are also shifting. They are no longer solely satisfied with traditional, unadorned pieces but are increasingly drawn to jade jewelry that incorporates modern design concepts and possesses a sense of fashion. This opens up vast opportunities for innovative applications of Hetian jade. Investing in pieces that innovate upon traditional designs or collaborate with renowned designers will be a new growth point for Hetian jade investment in the future.

II. The Rise of New Forces: The "Icy and Fiery" Duality of Jadeite

Jadeite, known as the "King of Jade" for its vibrant green and crystal-clear transparency, has seen its prices skyrocket over the past few decades, creating countless wealth legends. However, in recent years, the jadeite market has also presented an "icy and fiery" duality.

The "icy" aspect is reflected in the continuous decline in prices for ordinary and low-end jadeite, with some even becoming unsellable. This is primarily due to a large market supply and consumers' increasing pursuit of quality.

The "fiery" aspect, however, is evident in the sustained strength and even record-breaking prices of high-quality, rare-colored jadeite (such as Imperial Green and Glassy Jadeite). These top-tier jadeites are not merely jewelry but also works of art and scarce resources, and their ability to preserve and appreciate value is undeniable.

My unique insight is that for ordinary investors, blindly pursuing top-tier jadeite carries significant risks and has a very high entry barrier. We should instead focus on "potential stocks":

  • Jadeite with excellent clarity and texture (种水俱佳) but slight color imperfections. Through clever carving and setting, these imperfections can be transformed into advantages, enhancing their overall value.

  • Unique and niche jadeite, such as Mo Cui (black jadeite), Huang Fei (yellow jadeite), and Zi Luolan (lavender jadeite). These jadeites were previously undervalued, but with the diversification of consumer aesthetics, their unique charm is gradually being recognized.

I once helped a client acquire a lavender jadeite bangle with excellent clarity and texture at a relatively low price, as market awareness for lavender jadeite was not high at the time. Years later, with the growing popularity of lavender jadeite, the value of this bangle increased several times over. This demonstrates that a discerning eye and foresight into market trends are crucial for successful jadeite investment.

III. The "Dark Horse" Potential of Niche Jades: Overlooked Value Depressions

Beyond Hetian jade and jadeite, many niche jades, such as Nan Hong agate, turquoise, amber, and beeswax, have also shown impressive investment potential in recent years.

Nan Hong agate, with its vibrant red color and warm texture, is highly sought after. High-quality Nan Hong, especially "persimmon red" and "brocade red," has seen continuous price increases. Its rarity and non-renewable nature give it long-term investment value.

Turquoise, with its unique blue color and rich historical and cultural heritage, attracts many collectors. High-porcelain, high-blue turquoise, especially untreated raw ore products, is a "hard currency" in the market.

Amber and beeswax, as organic gemstones, are loved for their warm touch and unique textures. Rare varieties like old beeswax and blood amber are particularly coveted by collectors.

My advice for investing in niche jades is to pay special attention to three factors: "origin, quality, and rarity." Simultaneously, be wary of imitations and treated products in the market. Choose reputable dealers and seek professional appraisal.

IV. Investment Strategy and Risk Aversion: The Wisdom of Navigating Cycles

  • Long-Term Holding, Value Investing: Jade investment is not short-term speculation but rather value investing that requires patience and foresight. Choosing truly valuable jade and holding it long-term will allow you to reap the benefits of its appreciation.

  • Diversified Investment, Risk Mitigation: Do not concentrate all your capital on a single type of jade. Reasonably allocating different types and price points of jade can effectively diversify risks.

  • Learn Appreciation, Enhance Your Eye: The jade market is complex, and distinguishing authenticity can be challenging. Learning more about jade and improving your appraisal skills is fundamental to successful investment.

  • Focus on Culture, Grasp Trends: Jade is not just a commodity but also a carrier of culture. Paying attention to the inheritance and innovation of jade culture and understanding market aesthetic trends will enable you to make more informed investment decisions.

  • Seek Professional Advice, Make Prudent Decisions: For unfamiliar areas, always seek the advice of professionals. Do not blindly follow trends, and do not easily believe in so-called "get-rich-quick" schemes.

Summary and Recommendations:

Jade investment is both an art and a science. In the current market environment, we should maintain a clear mind, examine the market with a professional eye, and plan investments with a long-term perspective.

In the future, the polarization of the jade market will become more pronounced: high-quality, rare, and culturally rich jade will continue to strengthen, while ordinary and low-end jade will face greater challenges.

For investors, my recommendations are:

  • Focus on Quality: Prioritize quality over quantity. Choose jade that truly possesses rarity, artistic value, and cultural significance.

  • Embrace Innovation: Pay attention to innovation in jade design and craftsmanship, and seek new growth points that align with contemporary aesthetics.

  • Deepen Your Knowledge: Continuously enhance your professional knowledge and appraisal skills to become a discerning collector and investor.

Navigating cycles and unearthing future value. I believe that as long as we adhere to professional, cautious, and long-term investment principles, the jade market can still bring us substantial returns.
