Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Wang, a veteran jade enthusiast who has been involved with jade for nearly thirty years. Looking back, I was once a complete novice, but through a combination of passion and several learning experiences (paying tuition fees), I gradually found my way. Today, I want to share my years of experience and insights into collecting jade without reservation, hoping to help everyone avoid detours, play smarter, and collect with more peace of mind.
Scene Introduction: My First 'Treasure' and Learning Experience
I remember it was over twenty years ago, at a street stall in Panjiayuan. I was immediately drawn to a piece of 'old jade' that was entirely green and lustrous. The vendor claimed it was Qing Dynasty Hetian jade, and the price was steep. At the time, I was young and impulsive, thinking I had stumbled upon a treasure. Without hesitation, I paid for it. After returning home, I admired it more and more, and even specifically consulted a knowledgeable friend. My friend just smiled, telling me it was nothing more than ordinary Xiuyan jade, and dyed at that. At that moment, my heart sank, but it was precisely this 'tuition fee' that made me determined to learn more about jade, so I wouldn't be taken advantage of again.
Core Skill One: Learning is the Primary Productive Force – From Theory to Practice
When collecting jade, knowledge is the foundation. Don't expect to rely on luck to find a bargain. My experience is:
- Read more, read good books: Find authoritative books on jade identification, history, and culture, such as 'Compendium of Chinese Jade' or 'Jade Appreciation and Collection'. Systematically learn the basic knowledge of jade's origin, types, texture, color, craftsmanship,沁色 (qin se - seeped color),皮壳 (pi ke - skin/patina), etc. I borrowed and read every jade-related book I could find in the library at that time.
- Observe more real objects, handle more: Reading alone is not enough; you must visit museums, jade exhibitions, and antique markets frequently. Touch them with your own hands and observe them carefully. Feel the warmth and density of different jades. I often spent half a day in museums, studying the carving and patina of exquisite jade pieces in display cases. In antique markets, even if not buying, I would ask questions and observe a lot to train my eye.
- Learn from a master, humbly seek advice: Find a reliable expert as a mentor, or make friends with experienced collectors. Their practical experience cannot be learned from books. I shamelessly followed an old senior to the market, and he taught me how to distinguish between genuine and fake, and how to perceive the 'spirit' of jade.
Core Skill Two: Slow and Steady Wins the Race – Collection Strategy and Mindset
Collecting jade is a long-term process; avoid being eager for quick success.
- Clarify your collection direction: Do you prefer Hetian jade, jadeite, or do you like high-ancient jade, Ming and Qing dynasty jade? Do you prioritize material or craftsmanship? Having a clear direction allows for more precise learning and searching. Personally, I prefer Hetian jade, especially籽料 (zi liao - pebble jade), because its warm and subtle qualities deeply appeal to me.
- Act within your means, prioritize quality over quantity: Do not blindly pursue high prices, and certainly do not go into debt for collecting. Collecting is a hobby, not a burden. One exquisite piece is better than ten ordinary ones. I would rather save money for several years to buy a truly good piece of jade than buy a pile of mediocre ones just to increase the quantity.
- Maintain a calm mind, enjoy the process: Setbacks are inevitable in collecting, such as buying a fake or missing out on a desired treasure. Maintain a normal mindset and treat every experience as an opportunity to learn. Enjoy the process of searching, appreciating, and handling; this is the true essence of collecting.
Precautions: Pitfall Avoidance Guide
- Beware of 'story jade': Jade pieces with fabricated, outlandish stories are often hotbeds for fakes. Remember, the jade itself speaks; it doesn't need extra embellishment.
- Stay away from 'chemical-treated jade' and 'B+C goods': Modern counterfeiting techniques are endless. Be especially wary of jade that has been acid-washed, glued, or dyed. These jades not only lack collection value but may also be harmful to health with long-term contact.
- Don't easily trust 'experts': The market is full of mixed 'experts', some even colluding with vendors. Your own discerning eye is the most reliable. Cross-reference information and listen to different opinions.
- Proper storage: Jade should be protected from bumps, high temperatures, and direct strong sunlight. Regularly wipe it with a soft cloth to maintain its warm luster. I usually keep my treasures in special brocade boxes and occasionally take them out to handle, allowing them to 'breathe'.
Experience Summary: Collecting is a Dialogue with Jade
Thirty years of collecting have taught me that collecting jade is not just about owning a few beautiful stones; it's also about cultural inheritance and a cultivation of character. Each piece of jade carries the imprint of history and embodies the wisdom of artisans. When we hold a warm piece of jade, feeling its temperature across time, it's as if we can converse with ancient people. This is the greatest joy of collecting. I hope my experiences can inspire everyone, and I wish all fellow collectors find their own peace and joy in the world of jade!
