Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Li, and I've been involved with jade for thirty years. I have a special fondness for the warm red of Nanhong agate. Over the years, I've seen too many friends inadvertently dull their vibrant Nanhong due to improper care, and I've also witnessed many fine pieces become even more radiant with meticulous attention. Today, I'd like to share my years of experience with you, discussing the daily care and play techniques for Nanhong.

Introduction to the Scene:
I remember when I first started, I acquired a superb Nanhong agate bracelet from Liangshan. Its red was like a burning fire, and its luster was like solidified fat. However, not long after, due to my lack of knowledge about care, I actually left it on a windowsill exposed to direct sunlight. As a result, within a few months, the beads became somewhat dry and dehydrated, and their color appeared less translucent. That lesson was heartbreaking and prompted me to thoroughly understand the 'temperament' of Nanhong. Through continuous learning and practice, I gradually developed a set of effective maintenance methods.

Core Techniques: The 'Five Essentials' and 'Three Taboos' of Nanhong

I. Essential for Warmth and Luster: Maintain Moderate Humidity
Nanhong agate is essentially a hydrous mineral, and it fears dryness the most. My experience is that daily wear is the best form of maintenance. The oils and sweat secreted by human skin will gradually moisturize the surface of Nanhong, forming a natural protective film that makes it increasingly lustrous with wear. If not worn for an extended period, I recommend placing it in a sealed bag or jewelry box, along with a small cup of water (without direct contact with the Nanhong), or wrapping it in a damp cotton cloth before storing it, to maintain environmental humidity. Remember, it's about maintaining environmental humidity, not letting the Nanhong soak in water! I once tried wiping it with baby oil or olive oil, but the effect was not as good as the natural oils secreted by the human body, and improper operation could clog pores, affecting its translucency.

II. Essential for Cleaning: Gentle Wiping
After prolonged wear, Nanhong inevitably accumulates dust or dirt. My method is to simply wipe it gently with a soft cotton cloth or deerskin cloth. If the dirt is stubborn, you can rinse it with clean water and then immediately dry it with a soft cloth. Remember, never use any chemical cleaning agents, including dish soap, soapy water, etc., as they may corrode the surface of Nanhong and cause it to lose its luster. I once had a friend who used toothpaste to clean it, and the Nanhong's surface was abraded, losing all its luster, which was a great pity.

III. Essential for Playing: Clean Hands
Playing with Nanhong is a crucial step in enhancing its quality. Before playing, be sure to wash and dry your hands thoroughly. When playing, gently rub the surface of the Nanhong with your fingertips, allowing it to fully contact human oils. Initially, you can play for 1-2 hours daily. Once a patina forms on its surface, you can appropriately reduce the playing time. During the playing process, feel the changes in the Nanhong's temperature and texture; this itself is a form of enjoyment. I usually unconsciously play with my Nanhong bracelet while reading or resting, and over time, it becomes as warm and lustrous as fine jade, with a subdued glow.

IV. Essential for Avoiding Light: Keep Away from Strong Light
Although Nanhong agate is brightly colored, prolonged exposure to strong sunlight may cause its color to fade or even 'discolor.' Therefore, when storing and wearing it daily, try to avoid direct sunlight. Especially in summer, do not casually place Nanhong jewelry in hot, strong light areas such as in a car or on a windowsill.

V. Essential for Preventing Bumps: Handle with Care
Although Nanhong agate has a decent hardness, it is still a gemstone and is susceptible to drops and bumps. When wearing it, avoid friction and collision with hard objects to prevent scratches or cracks. When exercising or engaging in heavy physical labor, it's best to remove Nanhong jewelry. I once accidentally dropped a cherished Nanhong bracelet, and although it didn't shatter, a small piece chipped off, which was heartbreaking.

Three Taboos:

  • Avoid high temperature exposure: Leads to dehydration and color fading.

  • Avoid contact with chemicals: Corrodes the surface, causing loss of luster.

  • Avoid friction with hard objects: Causes scratches or damage.

Summary of Experience:
Nanhong agate has a spirit; if you treat it well, it will reward you with more beautiful luster and a warmer texture. Daily care and playing are not just physical care but also an emotional exchange. Remember, there are no shortcuts, only patience and meticulousness. As long as you care for it with your heart, your Nanhong will become increasingly beautiful and a unique landscape in your hand. I hope my experience can be helpful to everyone. I wish all collectors can own their desired Nanhong and maintain it to be even more dazzling!
