Today, I'd like to share my experiences with you, especially regarding the selection of jade display cabinets.

I remember when I first started collecting, my jade pieces were casually placed in drawers or wrapped in cloth and hidden away. As my collection grew, I realized this was neither convenient for appreciation nor safe from bumps and damage. Once, a beloved piece of Hetian jade seed material accidentally rolled off the table and chipped a small corner. I was so heartbroken that I couldn't eat for days. From then on, I was determined to give my treasures a home that was both safe and presentable.

Core Techniques: The 'Three Elements' of Display Cabinet Selection

After years of exploration and countless 'tuition fees,' I've summarized three core elements for choosing a jade display cabinet: safety, aesthetics, and practicality.

  • Safety First: Anti-theft and Shock Absorption

* Anti-theft: This is paramount. My first display cabinet was just a regular glass cabinet, and once, my house was burgled. Although no major items were lost, that experience completely put me on alert. Later, the display cabinets I chose all came with anti-theft locks, preferably multi-point locking mechanisms, or even fingerprint or password locks. The glass material should also be tempered glass, at least 5mm thick, so that even if someone tries to force their way in, it buys more time. I even considered installing miniature alarms inside the cabinet, and although I didn't ultimately implement it, this vigilance is essential.
* Shock Absorption: Although jade is hard, it cannot withstand severe vibrations and bumps. The structure of the display cabinet must be stable and not wobble. The interior of the cabinet should preferably be lined with velvet, silk, or EVA shock-absorbing mats to provide soft cushioning for the jade. I personally prefer dark-colored velvet, which both highlights the warm luster of the jade and effectively prevents slipping and shock. For some particularly precious small pieces, I custom-make bases with grooves to ensure they sit securely.

  • Aesthetics: Lighting and Background

* Lighting: Good lighting can make jade glow. I've tried various light sources and ultimately found that LED spotlights are the best choice. They generate little heat, which won't cause thermal damage to the jade, and the light is concentrated, highlighting the texture and carving of the jade. In terms of color temperature, I recommend choosing 3000K-4000K warm white light. This light best restores the natural color of the jade, making it appear warm and lustrous. Avoid using overly bright white light, which can make the jade look pale and lifeless. My display cabinets usually have adjustable spotlights installed at the top and sides, which I fine-tune according to the placement of the jade.
* Background: A simple background can better set off the jade. I usually choose a solid-colored, matte background panel, such as dark gray, off-white, or wood grain. Avoid flashy patterns or reflective materials, as they will distract. The material of the background panel should also be considered; wood or velvet can enhance the overall texture.

  • Practicality: Size and Function

* Size: Before purchasing, be sure to measure the placement space and leave enough room for opening the doors. Also, consider future collection growth and choose a slightly larger size, or a modular combination cabinet for easy expansion later. My experience is that it's better to be a bit too big than to regret being too small.
* Functionality: In addition to basic display functions, some additional features are also very practical. For example, cabinets with adjustable shelf heights can accommodate jade pieces of different sizes. Those with drawers or hidden compartments can store some jade that shouldn't be exposed for long periods, or maintenance tools. I've even seen display cabinets with humidity control functions, which is indeed a good choice for some particularly delicate jade types, but they come at a high price.

Precautions:

* Avoid direct sunlight: Long-term direct sunlight can cause the jade surface to lose water and even change color, so the display cabinet should be kept away from windows.
* Regular cleaning: The glass surface and interior should be wiped regularly to keep them clean and ensure the jade always shines brightly. I generally use a soft cotton cloth dampened with clean water, avoiding chemical cleaners.
* Moisture and dust prevention: If the living environment is humid, consider placing desiccants inside the cabinet. At the same time, the display cabinet should have good sealing to prevent dust from entering.
