Hello everyone, I am Liu Siyuan. Having toiled in the jade industry for over two decades, from an initial apprentice to a current industry observer, I have witnessed the tumultuous changes in the jade market and have accumulated a unique understanding of jewelry investment. Today, I would like to share some of my latest thoughts, hoping to provide valuable insights for all jade enthusiasts and investors.
In recent years, the global economic landscape has been complex and volatile, posing significant challenges to various investment markets. However, against this backdrop, jade, especially high-quality jadeite and Hetian jade, has demonstrated astonishing resilience and growth potential. This is not by chance, but rather determined by its unique cultural value, scarcity, and artistic attributes.
My first point is: Jade investment has entered an era where "value回归" (return to value) and "aesthetic upgrading" proceed in parallel.
In the past, many investors viewed jade as a simple commodity, chasing short-term price fluctuations. But now, I observe that the market is becoming more rational, and investors are increasingly focusing on the artistic value, cultural connotations, and historical heritage of jade itself. A piece of jadeite that is merely "large" or "green," if poorly carved and with a mediocre auspicious meaning, will see its investment value significantly discounted. Conversely, a jade piece, even if not large in size, but possessing excellent "种水色" (texture, clarity, and color), exquisite carving, and rich cultural heritage, often surpasses the value of its material itself.
For example, a few years ago, the market was keen on pursuing "Imperial Green," and its price was once artificially inflated. But today, those jadeites with delicate "种水" (texture and clarity) and unique charm, such as "晴水" (light blue-green) or "紫罗兰" (lavender) hues, if uniquely designed and exquisitely crafted, show more stable market performance, even experiencing counter-cyclical growth. This indicates that investors' aesthetic appreciation for jade is shifting from a singular focus on "color" to a more comprehensive understanding of "种水色工艺寓意" (texture, clarity, color, craftsmanship, and auspicious meaning).
My second point is: Scarcity and cultural attributes are the "hardcore" support for jade investment.
Under the pressure of inflation, people's demand for the preservation and appreciation of scarce assets is growing. Jade, especially naturally formed high-quality jade rough, is inherently scarce due to its non-renewable nature. At the same time, the special affection of the Chinese nation for jade endows it with profound cultural attributes. This cultural attribute makes jade not just material wealth, but also a spiritual sustenance and cultural symbol.
I once met a collector who owned a Qing Dynasty Hetian jade籽料 (seed jade) ornament. This jade material itself was warm and lustrous, with ancient and rustic carving. More importantly, it carried hundreds of years of historical accumulation and cultural memory. When he showed me this collection, what I felt was not just the value of the jade, but also a cross-temporal cultural connection. This sense of cultural identity is something that no other investment product can easily replace. Therefore, when choosing to invest in jade, in addition to paying attention to the jade quality itself, one should also pay attention to its historical origins, cultural background, and artistic style.
My third point is: Professional appraisal ability and channel selection are key to successful jade investment.
The jade market is deep and complex, with counterfeits and inferior goods being common. Without professional appraisal skills, it's easy to be "打眼" (deceived) and suffer losses. Therefore, investors must continuously learn and improve their appraisal skills. This includes understanding professional knowledge such as the origin, type, texture, color, and craftsmanship of jade.
At the same time, choosing reliable purchasing channels is also crucial. I recommend that everyone try to choose reputable brands or professional auction houses with a long history. These institutions usually have professional appraisal teams and comprehensive after-sales services, which can provide more reliable guarantees for investors. Avoid being greedy for cheap prices and blindly trusting unknown channels.
Looking ahead, I believe jade investment will exhibit the following trends:
- Personalized customization and artistic design will become mainstream. With the rise of younger consumer groups, their demand for jade is no longer limited to traditional styles, but rather pursues individuality, fashion, and artistic flair.
- Technology empowerment will enhance the transparency and trustworthiness of jade. Technologies such as blockchain and big data are expected to be applied to jade tracing, appraisal, and trading, providing a more transparent and secure trading environment for investors.
- An international perspective will further broaden. Chinese jade culture is gradually moving towards the world, and in the future, more international investors will pay attention to and participate in the Chinese jade market.
Summary and Recommendations:
Jade investment is not speculation; it requires patience, vision, and professional knowledge. My recommendations are:
Firstly, learn deeply and improve appraisal skills. Observe more, ask more, compare more, consult industry experts, and accumulate practical experience.
Secondly, focus on value, not price. Choose high-quality jade with cultural connotations, artistic value, and scarcity.
Thirdly, diversify investments to mitigate risks. Do not invest all funds in a single category of jade; appropriately allocate different types and styles of jade.
Fourthly, choose reliable channels and trade cautiously. Cooperate with reputable merchants and request authoritative appraisal certificates.
Fifthly, maintain a long-term mindset. The value of jade often requires time to settle and manifest; short-term fluctuations should not affect long-term investment decisions.
Jade is a gift from nature and a treasure of Chinese culture. Investing in jade is not just the accumulation of wealth, but also the pursuit of beauty and the inheritance of culture. I hope my sharing can provide some new ideas and directions for everyone on their jade investment journey. Thank you all!
