Hello fellow collectors! I'm Old Wang, a collector who has been dealing with jade for half my life. Today, I want to share my experiences participating in auctions over the years, hoping to offer some practical advice to those who are new to the field or are still exploring.
Setting the Scene:
I still remember my first auction, which took place in the late 1990s, a local arts and crafts auction. At that time, I was a greenhorn, driven by passion and an obsession with a piece of 'old mine jadeite'. I bid up to a price that still makes my heart ache when I think about it now. The result? That so-called 'old mine jadeite' was later confirmed to be B-grade, and I suffered a huge loss. From then on, I realized that the auction house is not a place where you can find bargains by luck; it's more like a war without smoke, requiring strategy, keen eyesight, and, most importantly, a calm mind.
Core Techniques:
- Know Yourself and Your Opponent, and You'll Win Every Battle: Preparation is Key.
* Research the Lots: The auction catalog is your primary source of information. Carefully read the description of each lot, including material, size, age, provenance, flaws, etc. Don't just look at photos, as they often beautify the items. If possible, always attend the preview to inspect the physical objects. I once flew to Beijing specifically to view a Qing Dynasty jade piece; the feel, luster, and natural inclusions were completely lost in photos. During the preview, I bring a strong flashlight, a magnifying glass, and even a small UV lamp to carefully examine the jade quality, carving, presence of cracks, and signs of repair.
* Set a Psychological Price: Before the auction, I always conduct market research on the desired lots to understand the market price of similar jade pieces, and then set a maximum psychological price. Once this price is determined, I firmly stick to it. My experience is that exceeding the budget often leads to regret, as impulsive purchases often result in overpaying for something not worth the price.
- Bid Calmly, Prioritize Strategy.
* Avoid Blind Following: For some lots, people start bidding frantically from the beginning. At this point, it's crucial to remain calm. Sometimes it's a shill, sometimes it's blind pursuit due to information asymmetry. I'd rather miss out than overpay for a mistake.
* Strike at the Right Time: True experts often make their move in the final rounds, striking decisively. I usually wait until the price approaches my psychological limit before joining the bidding, and my bids are firm, conveying my determination to opponents. However, if the price exceeds expectations, I will abandon it without hesitation.
Precautions:
* Beware of the 'Bargain Hunting' Mentality: The chances of finding a true bargain at an auction are extremely slim. Most 'bargains' are traps. There's no such thing as a free lunch, only traps. My B-grade jadeite is the best lesson.
* Understand Commissions and Taxes: After a successful bid, in addition to the hammer price, you'll also need to pay the auction house commission (usually ranging from 10%-20%) and any applicable taxes. These must be calculated in advance, otherwise, you might exceed your budget.
* Retain Evidence: When taking delivery of the lot, carefully verify that the physical item matches the catalog description. If you have any doubts, raise them immediately. Keep all transaction receipts for future reference.
Summary of Experience:
For me, auctions are not just about buying and selling; they are a process of learning and growth. Every bid, successful or not, is a valuable accumulation of experience. It has taught me how to research jade more deeply, how to judge the market more calmly, and how to better control my desires. Remember, collecting is a marathon, not a sprint. Maintain your passion for learning, cultivate a keen eye, and most importantly, enjoy the pleasure this process brings. I hope my 'stories of blood and tears' and 'experience talks' can be helpful to everyone. I wish all fellow collectors success in the auction house and the acquisition of their cherished treasures!
