Beyond Tradition: AI and Spectroscopy Usher in a New Era of Jade Identification
Industry Observation
Shanghai, China, May 15, 2024 – Jade, a treasure of Chinese civilization, has always been a focal point for market attention regarding its authenticity and quality. In recent years, with the rapid development of technology, traditional empirical identification methods are facing unprecedented technological innovation. The deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced spectroscopic techniques, in particular, is bringing disruptive changes to the field of jade identification.
At the recent “2024 International Jewelry Technology Seminar” jointly organized by the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) Gemology Institute and the Shanghai Jade Culture Research Center, several experts and scholars showcased their latest breakthroughs in jade identification technology. According to data released at the seminar, the accuracy of origin tracing for mainstream jades such as Hetian jade and jadeite, using Raman Spectroscopy combined with machine learning algorithms, has increased to 92.5%. The identification accuracy for optimization treatments (e.g., dyeing, resin filling) is even higher, reaching 98.7%. This achievement far surpasses the average level of traditional visual identification and even exceeds the efficiency of single large-scale instrumental testing.
“We are moving from an era of 'human eyes examining jade' to 'machines reading jade',” said Professor Wang from the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) Gemology Institute at the seminar. “AI algorithms can process massive amounts of spectral data, extracting microscopic features imperceptible to the human eye, thereby achieving more precise and efficient identification. For example, by quantitatively analyzing the absorption differences of chromium and iron elements in specific bands within jadeite, AI models can effectively distinguish between natural A-grade jadeite and B+C treated jadeite.”
Researcher Li from the Shanghai Jade Culture Research Center added: “In the past, identifying a complex jade artifact might take hours for experienced experts. Now, with portable spectrometers and cloud-based AI platforms, even ordinary consumers can get preliminary identification results within minutes, which greatly enhances market transparency and reduces identification costs. We predict that within the next three years, the market share of intelligent identification equipment based on AI and spectroscopy will rapidly grow from less than 5% currently to over 20%.”
Currently, several technology companies have begun to enter this emerging market. For example, Shenzhen “Jade Insights Tech” company launched an intelligent identification instrument called “Jade Treasure Detector,” which integrates Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) modules, equipped with a self-developed AI recognition engine. According to the company's internal report, since its market launch in the second half of 2023, it has completed preliminary identification services for over 100,000 pieces of jade, with user satisfaction reaching over 95%. Its data model is continuously optimized through ongoing learning, and recognition accuracy continues to steadily improve.
However, challenges remain. High research and development costs, scarcity of professional talent, and consumer acceptance of new technologies are all factors limiting its widespread adoption. Furthermore, some unscrupulous individuals may also use high-tech methods for imitation and optimization treatments, which requires identification technologies to continuously iterate and upgrade to maintain a leading position.
Looking ahead, with the further maturity of 5G, big data, and cloud computing technologies, jade identification will become more intelligent, convenient, and standardized. We have reason to believe that the deep integration of AI and spectroscopic technologies will provide solid technological support for the healthy development of the jade industry, ensuring that the value of every piece of jade can be fairly and accurately assessed.
