According to Mr. Li Ming, Secretary-General of the Suzhou Jade Culture Industry Association: “We are seeing more and more young designers, such as post-85s jade carver Zhang Hua, integrating modern abstract art and Western sculptural concepts into jade carving. His series of works, 'City Rhythm,' exhibited at the Shanghai International Jewelry Exhibition in 2023, combined Hetian jade with agate, lapis lazuli, and other diverse materials, using geometric cutting and multi-dimensional spatial composition. It won the 'Tiangong Award' gold prize, with an average transaction price of a single piece exceeding 1.5 million RMB, far surpassing traditional-themed jade carvings of similar materials.”

Furthermore, the application of high-tech means such as 3D printing and laser engraving has provided more possibilities for jade carving creation. While traditional handcrafting remains at the core, the introduction of auxiliary technologies enables jade carvers to achieve more complex and precise structures and effects, greatly expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. For instance, Beijing jade master Wang Li has recently experimented with combining traditional floral and bird patterns with modernist lines, using computer-aided design (CAD) to pre-set carving paths before fine hand polishing. According to data from Ali Auction, in 2023, the consumption by young consumers under 35 in the field of jade art increased by 45% year-on-year. They tend to prefer innovative works with unique designs that reflect their individuality.

Master Liu Dehua, a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor (jade carving), emphasized: “Innovation is the lifeblood of jade carving, but its roots are in tradition. We must learn tradition, understand tradition, and only then can we transcend tradition.
