Jade Auction Market 'Spring Blooms': High-End Jadeite Defies Trends, Hetian Jade's Potential Unlocks

[Shanghai, May 22, 2024] The global jade auction market in Spring 2024 presented a mixed yet generally positive outlook. According to the latest '2024 Spring Global Jade Auction Report' released by the market analysis department of JadeGlobal.com, despite macroeconomic challenges, high-end jadeite lots continued to demonstrate strong resilience and collection value. Meanwhile, the Hetian jade market, driven by a diversified collector base, showed significant growth potential.

High-End Jadeite: Scarcity and Cultural Value Forge Market Resilience

The report highlights that at the recently concluded Sotheby's Hong Kong Spring Sale, an 'Imperial Green' natural jadeite bead necklace fetched a staggering HKD 120 million (approximately USD 15.4 million), significantly exceeding its pre-sale estimate. This necklace, comprising 28 plump, uniformly colored Imperial Green jadeite beads, each exceeding 15 mm in diameter, was acquired by an anonymous Asian collector. Ms. Wen Haoyi, Head of Jewellery at Sotheby's Asia, stated in an interview: “The scarcity, irreplicability, and profound Eastern cultural connotations of top-tier jadeite make it an excellent asset for weathering market fluctuations. In this Spring Sale, we observed immense enthusiasm from collectors for jadeite lots of exceptional quality and reputable provenance.”

Christie's Hong Kong Spring Sale further corroborated this trend. Its 'Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite' specialist sale achieved a total of HKD 350 million, with numerous high-ice-grade and glass-grade jadeite bangles and pendants selling at or above their high estimates. Data shows that in the first quarter of 2024, the number of jadeite lots sold globally for over RMB 10 million increased by 15% year-on-year, with an average premium rate of 28%. This indicates that genuine jadeite treasures with collectible value continue to be in strong demand.

Hetian Jade: Cultural Revival and New Investment Darling

In contrast to the vibrant jadeite market, the Hetian jade market exhibited a more diversified development. Auction data from Beijing Poly and China Guardian's Spring Sales revealed new highlights in high-quality raw籽料 (zǐliào - seed material) and works by renowned carvers. Mr. Li Ming, General Manager of Chinese Paintings, Calligraphy and Antiques at Poly Auction, disclosed: “We are seeing an increasing number of young collectors focusing on Hetian jade. They not only value the quality of the jade but also the cultural stories and artistic value behind it. A Hetian jade sculpture titled 'Autumn Mountain Journey' by contemporary jade carving master Wu Desheng sold for RMB 8 million at this season's Guardian Spring Sale, setting a new auction record for Master Wu's personal works.”

The report analyzes that the growth drivers for the Hetian jade market primarily stem from several aspects: Firstly, with the revival of traditional Chinese culture, Hetian jade's status as 'National Jade' has become increasingly prominent, attracting a large number of new collectors due to its cultural attributes. Secondly, compared to jadeite, the 'entry-level' prices for high-quality Hetian jade are relatively more accessible, lowering the barrier to entry for collectors. Furthermore, the innovation and development of jade carving art have brought more Hetian jade works with modern aesthetics and exquisite craftsmanship to the market, broadening the scope of collection. According to statistics, in Spring 2024, the overall sell-through rate for Hetian jade lots reached 78%, with raw seed material and works by master carvers achieving sell-through rates of over 90%.

Market Outlook and Challenges

Ms. Zhang Hua, a market analyst at JadeGlobal.com, stated: “While the high-end jadeite market performed strongly, the mid-to-low-end jadeite market experienced greater price volatility due to economic downturns, with buyers becoming more cautious. For Hetian jade, key challenges for future development include regulating the market to prevent an influx of inferior fakes and cultivating more jade carving talents with an international perspective.”

Looking ahead to the second half of the year, the high-end jade auction market is expected to remain active, with rare treasures continuing to lead the trend. Simultaneously, as consumers' understanding of jade culture deepens and the demand for diversified art investments grows, Hetian jade is anticipated to attract more attention. Collectors are advised to prioritize quality, origin, craftsmanship, and cultural value when investing in jade, and to choose reputable auction houses and professional institutions for transactions.
