Industry Watch: Beyond Tradition! AI and Spectroscopic Technologies Unite, Ushering Jade Appraisal into the 'Intelligent Eye' Era

In the ancient and mysterious world of jade, authenticating true from false has always been a core challenge hindering industry development. However, with the rapid advancement of technology, especially the deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced spectroscopic analysis techniques, jade appraisal is undergoing a revolutionary transformation. The '2024 Jade Industry Technology Innovation Report' recently released by Global Jade Network indicates that AI-algorithm-based Raman spectroscopy and Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy have achieved unprecedented precision and efficiency in identifying jade authenticity, origin, and optimization treatments.

Traditional jade appraisal heavily relies on expert experience, which is time-consuming and susceptible to subjective factors. But now, the situation is changing. Taking the 'Intelligent Eye System' jointly developed by Peking University Gemological Research Center and the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as an example, this system has built a massive database by collecting spectroscopic data from a vast number of genuine and fake jade samples. According to Dr. Li Ming, Professor of Gemology at Peking University and project leader, "The 'Intelligent Eye System' can complete a preliminary judgment of the authenticity and origin of a Hetian jade within one minute. Its accuracy in distinguishing Russian material from Xinjiang Hetian jade has exceeded 95%, and its recognition rate for B-grade and C-grade jadeite is as high as 98.7%." This data is significantly higher than the average accuracy of traditional visual appraisal (approximately 80%-85%) and greatly reduces human error.

In the field of jadeite appraisal, AI-assisted fluorescence spectroscopy also shows great potential. Wang Fang, a senior engineer at the Gem & Jade Appraisal Center of Guangzhou Geological Survey, stated, "We are testing a portable fluorescence spectrometer combined with deep learning algorithms. This device effectively identifies acid-washed and resin-filled (B-grade) and dyed (C-grade) treatments by analyzing the fluorescence response of jadeite under different excitation wavelengths. Laboratory data shows that over the past year, we successfully identified more than 3,000 pieces of B+C treated fake jadeite using this technology, accounting for 45% of all difficult samples during the same period." This not only improves appraisal efficiency but also provides more reliable assurance for consumers.

Furthermore, origin tracing is a major challenge in jade appraisal. While traditional trace element analysis is effective, it is often destructive. However, Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) technologies, combined with machine learning algorithms, are providing non-destructive or minimally destructive solutions. Chen Gang, Director of Chongqing Jade Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, revealed, "We are collaborating with a Swiss technology company to develop an origin identification model based on portable XRF devices. Preliminary tests show that this model can distinguish some major origin characteristics of Russian, Canadian, Qinghai, and Xinjiang Hetian jade, with an accuracy of around 80%, which is expected to improve further in the future."

Despite encouraging technological advancements, challenges remain. High equipment costs, a shortage of professional talent, and the continuous emergence of new counterfeiting methods all demand sustained industry investment in research and development. Professor Zhang Hua from the School of Artificial Intelligence, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, emphasized, "The application of AI in jade appraisal still needs to address issues such as model generalization capability, few-shot learning, and adversarial attacks. We cannot solely rely on machines; expert experience and machine assistance should be complementary."

Looking ahead, with the popularization of technologies like 5G and the Internet of Things, emerging models such as remote appraisal and blockchain traceability will also be deeply integrated with AI appraisal technology, jointly building a more transparent and efficient jade trading ecosystem. Undoubtedly, this technology-driven revolution is propelling jade appraisal into an unprecedented 'Intelligent Eye' era, injecting strong momentum into the healthy development of the global jade market.
