【Beijing, May 15, 2024】Today, industry observers from Global Jade Network released their latest market analysis report, indicating that the Hetian jade collection and investment market showed strong growth momentum in the first quarter of 2024, especially in the high-end seed jade and master-carved works segments, where both transaction volume and average prices hit record highs. This trend is driven by the increasing scarcity of Hetian jade, its profound cultural value, and investors' continuous pursuit of value-preserving and appreciating assets.
Market Data Reveals Strong Growth
According to data jointly released by Global Jade Network and the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China (GAC), the total transaction value of Hetian jade nationwide reached RMB 18.2 billion in the first quarter of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 15.7%. Among these, the average transaction price of high-end seed jade (referring specifically to high-quality raw stones from the Yulongkash River and Karakash River in Xinjiang Hetian) rose by 22% compared to the same period last year, with some exquisite seed jades even becoming 'hard to find'. For instance, during the Shanghai International Jewelry Fair in March this year, a high-quality white Hetian jade seed weighing 350 grams was sold for a high price of RMB 26 million to renowned collector Mr. Li Ming.
“We are seeing sustained strong demand in the market for truly rare Hetian jade seeds,” said Mr. Chen Hua, Vice President and Secretary-General of GAC, in an interview. “Especially those natural seed jades that are unadorned, with natural skin colors, delicate and oily textures, their value is being re-evaluated and recognized by the market. This is not just an investment, but also a manifestation of cultural heritage.”
Scarcity as a Core Driver
The scarcity of Hetian jade is the core reason for its continuous appreciation. Strict restrictions on jade mining in the Hetian area of Xinjiang, coupled with the increasing depletion of high-quality seed jade resources, have led to continuous tension in market supply. According to data from the Department of Natural Resources of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the annual extraction volume of Hetian jade seeds has decreased by about 30% in the past five years, while market demand has shown counter-trend growth. This imbalance between supply and demand has directly pushed up the price of Hetian jade.
“Ten years ago, a superior Hetian jade seed could still be found in the market; now, even with money, it’s hard to buy a satisfactory one,” veteran jade merchant Zhang Wei told us in the Urumqi jade market. “We are now more often seeking transfers from old collectors, and the amount of new products flowing into the market is very limited.”
Dual Charm of Cultural Value and Art Investment
In addition to scarcity, the profound cultural heritage of Hetian jade is also an important factor attracting investors. In traditional Chinese culture, jade is regarded as the 'gentleman among stones', symbolizing beautiful virtues and spiritual pursuits. In recent years, with the rise of 'Guochao' (China Chic) culture and the enhancement of national self-confidence, more and more investors have begun to pay attention to artworks and collectibles with traditional Chinese cultural characteristics, and Hetian jade is undoubtedly a leader among them.
The works of famous jade carving master Wang Jianping have performed particularly well in the secondary market. One of his white jade carvings named “Lotus Rhyme Guanyin” was hammered for RMB 12 million at Beijing Hanhai's spring auction in April this year, far exceeding its previous estimate. This shows that the artistic value of master carvings is perfectly combined with the material value of Hetian jade itself, further enhancing its collection and investment potential.
Market Risks and Investment Advice
Despite the broad prospects of the Hetian jade market, investors still need to be aware of market risks. There are still fraudulent practices in the market, such as passing off inferior quality as superior, or mountain jade as seed jade. Lin Li, Chief Analyst at Global Jade Network, advises: “When purchasing Hetian jade, investors must seek professional appraisal certificates and choose reputable merchants. For novice investors, it is advisable to start with entry-level exquisite white jade pieces or characteristic seed jades, gradually deepening their understanding of the market. At the same time, it is also important to focus on carving craftsmanship and cultural connotation, rather than just pursuing the raw stone price.”
Looking ahead, with the continuous development of China's economy and the upgrading of cultural consumption, the collection and investment value of Hetian jade is expected to maintain steady growth.
