In the ever-changing jade market, authenticity verification has always been a core challenge for collectors, investors, and practitioners. Traditional identification methods often rely on experience, are highly subjective, and struggle to cope with increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting techniques. However, with the rapid development of technology, especially the deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and spectroscopic analysis, jade identification is undergoing a revolutionary transformation, entering a more precise and efficient 'Smart Eye' era.
Recently, the 'Jade Intelligent Identification System' jointly developed by the Gemology Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and Huawei Cloud has attracted widespread attention in the industry. The core technology of this system lies in its combination of multi-modal spectral data, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy (Raman), and X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), and its training on massive jade sample data through deep learning algorithms. According to Professor Li Ming, project leader at the Gemology Institute, “We spent three years collecting and analyzing over 50,000 standard spectral data sets of various jades and counterfeits, including mainstream varieties like Hetian jade, jadeite, and Dushan jade, as well as common imitation materials such as glass and quartzite. Currently, the system's accuracy for distinguishing genuine Hetian jade and jadeite exceeds 98.5%, and for identifying B-grade jadeite, it reaches an impressive 99.2%.” This data significantly surpasses the average level of traditional visual identification.
Beyond high accuracy, another major advantage of the new technology is its non-invasiveness and speed. Traditional destructive testing or time-consuming manual observation will gradually be replaced. For example, in Guangzhou Hualin Jade Market, a large jewelry merchant introduced a portable spectrometer, which, combined with cloud-based AI analysis, can complete a preliminary authenticity assessment of a jadeite pendant within 30 seconds, greatly improving transaction efficiency. According to Mr. Wang, the head of the jewelry merchant, “Previously, a suspicious jadeite sent to the laboratory for testing would take at least 2-3 working days. Now, we can perform quick preliminary screening directly in front of the customer, which greatly enhances customer trust. In the first half of this year, our store's transaction efficiency increased by nearly 20%.”
It is worth noting that AI's application in jade identification is not limited to authenticity recognition. It can also assist in determining the origin, optimization treatment methods, and even quality grades of jade. For instance, by analyzing the ratio of chromium and iron elements in jadeite, AI models can help determine if its origin is Myanmar, although this still needs to be combined with other features. Furthermore, for the identification of micro-cracks and fillers within jade, AI combined with high-resolution microscopic imaging technology can provide more detailed analysis reports.
However, the widespread adoption of new technologies still faces challenges. Firstly, there is the issue of equipment cost. A complete set of high-precision spectroscopic analysis equipment plus AI algorithm licensing fees remains a significant expense for small and medium-sized appraisal institutions or merchants. Secondly, data privacy and standardization are concerns. How to ensure the security and authority of large amounts of sample data and establish internationally accepted appraisal standards are urgent issues for the industry. Moreover, the 'black box' nature of artificial intelligence also causes some traditional appraisers to harbor doubts. How to achieve an effective combination of AI and human expert experience, rather than complete replacement, will be key to future development.
Looking ahead, jade identification technology will develop towards intelligence, portability, and multi-dimensional integration. It is expected that within the next 3-5 years, intelligent identification devices equipped with AI algorithms will become more widespread, not only in professional appraisal institutions but also enabling basic jade authenticity verification in the hands of consumers. This will greatly purify the jade market environment, boost consumer confidence, and inject new vitality into the healthy and sustainable development of the jade industry.
