With the rapid development of technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced spectroscopic techniques are revolutionizing traditional jade authentication with unprecedented depth and breadth. According to the latest research report from the Global Jade Network, new authentication systems combining AI deep learning with non-destructive testing methods such as Raman spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy have elevated the comprehensive authentication accuracy for high-value jade to over 95%, injecting strong confidence into the industry.
AI Empowerment: The 'Fiery Eyes' of Big Data
For a long time, jade authentication has relied heavily on the experience and visual inspection of experts. However, this highly subjective method often falls short when confronted with high-quality fakes and new optimization treatments. Professor Li Ming, Director of the Peking University Gemstone Identification Center, points out: “The core advantage of AI technology lies in its powerful data processing and pattern recognition capabilities. The 'Jade AI' system, developed in collaboration with Tsinghua University's Institute for Artificial Intelligence, has learned from over 1 million pieces of various jade types, including physical and chemical spectroscopic data, image features, and even historical transaction records, enabling it to quickly identify subtle differences imperceptible to the naked eye.”
Since its debut at the Shanghai International Jewelry Exhibition in early 2023, the 'Jade AI' system has been piloted in several leading authentication institutions. Data shows that when authenticating the genuineness, origin, and optimization methods of mainstream jades such as Hetian jade, jadeite, and Xiuyan jade, its identification speed is nearly 10 times faster than traditional manual methods, and the misjudgment rate for complex samples has decreased by over 30%. For instance, when identifying B-grade jadeite filled with resin, the AI system can provide an accurate judgment in just a few seconds by analyzing the characteristic organic absorption peaks in its spectrum, whereas traditional methods might take several minutes or even longer.
Spectroscopic Technology: From 'Seeing' to 'Quantitative Analysis'
In addition to AI's macroscopic analysis capabilities, breakthroughs in microscopic spectroscopic technology have also played a crucial role. Non-destructive techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy provide 'fingerprint maps' of jade's internal crystal structure, chemical composition, and molecular bonding information.
Researcher Zhang Hua from the Gemstone Laboratory of Guangzhou Geological Survey Institute explains: “We are promoting a portable Raman spectrometer, which is compact and easy to operate, capable of quickly acquiring molecular structure information of jade on-site. For example, by analyzing the characteristic peaks of tremolite in Hetian jade, it can effectively distinguish it from imitations like quartzite and marble. Furthermore, for dyed jade, FTIR spectroscopy can reveal the absorption characteristics of dye molecules, providing conclusive evidence.”
A three-month test conducted at the Shenzhen Jewelry and Jade Trading Center showed that the authentication process combining spectroscopic data and AI analysis improved efficiency by 40% when processing bulk import and export jade raw materials, while reducing human error to its lowest historical level. According to statistics, over 60% of the initial screening work for jade samples processed daily at the center is completed by intelligent systems, significantly alleviating the workload of authenticators.
Challenges and Outlook
Despite significant technological advancements, challenges remain. For instance, for some extremely rare jade varieties or new 'high-tech' counterfeiting methods, AI systems still need continuous learning and database updates. Moreover, equipment costs and training for professional operators are also important considerations for promoting these advanced technologies.
Wang Lei, Chief Analyst at Global Jade Network, predicts: “Within the next five years, AI and multi-spectral fusion authentication technology will become standard in the jade industry. With algorithm optimization and database expansion, we expect to achieve precise traceability for deeper information such as jade origin, age, and even mining areas, laying a solid foundation for building a more transparent and trustworthy global jade market.”
