Industry Observation
In recent years, against the backdrop of macroeconomic adjustments and diversified consumer markets, the collection and investment market for Hetian jade has shown new development trends. In 2023, despite challenges in the overall jade market, high-end, exquisite Hetian jade pieces demonstrated resilient growth, with cultural value and scarcity emerging as core drivers.
According to the '2023 China Jade Market Report' released by the Gem & Jewelry Trade Association of China, the total national jade transaction volume decreased by approximately 8% year-on-year. However, within this, the transaction volume of high-end Hetian jade pieces exceeding 500,000 RMB saw a 12.5% increase. Particularly in first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, as well as new first-tier cities such as Hangzhou and Chengdu, the demand from high-net-worth individuals for top-grade Hetian jade pebbles (seed material) and master-carved works remained strong. For instance, at the 2023 autumn Beijing Hanhai Auction, a 'Hetian Jade Pebble Guanyin Pendant' weighing 268 grams was ultimately sold for 12.8 million RMB, significantly exceeding its estimate and setting a new auction record for similar works in recent years. Mr. Wang Liming, head of the auction house, stated: “This pebble boasts fine texture, natural skin color, and exquisite craftsmanship, meeting all criteria for collectible Hetian jade. Its cultural connotation and artistic value were key to its high price.”
Mr. Li Huaqiang, Vice President of the Shanghai Jade Collectors Association, noted in an interview: “The current market understanding of Hetian jade is more mature. Investors are no longer blindly pursuing 'whiteness' but are paying more attention to the jade's warmth, oiliness, skin color, and the artistry of its carving. Especially high-quality pebbles produced in the Hetian region of Xinjiang, due to their non-renewable nature, have become synonymous with scarce resources, and their potential for value preservation and appreciation is widely recognized.”
From the perspective of origin, high-quality pebbles from Xinjiang's Hetian region remain the hard currency of the market. However, with increasing mining difficulties and strict government control over mineral resources, the supply of high-quality pebbles is decreasing year by year. According to data from the Xinjiang Hetian Jade Trading Center, the quantity of high-quality Hetian jade raw pebbles entering the market in 2023 decreased by 15% year-on-year, leading to further price increases. Concurrently, alternatives such as Russian jade and Qinghai jade, broadly classified as Hetian jade, have carved out a niche in the affordable and good-quality mid-to-low-end market, meeting the demands of mass consumption and entry-level collection.
In terms of carving craftsmanship, the value of works by renowned masters is increasingly prominent. For example, works by Suzhou jade carving masters like Yang Xi and Qu Lijun are highly sought after in the market due to their unique artistic style and superb skills. A 'Hetian Jade Pebble Landscape Pendant' created by Master Yang Xi was acquired by a Hong Kong collector for 8 million RMB at the 2023 Shenzhen Cultural Expo. This indicates that the cultural added value of jade carving art is becoming a crucial factor driving Hetian jade collection and investment.
Furthermore, with the development of the internet and blockchain technology, the transparency and trustworthiness of the Hetian jade market are gradually improving. Some platforms are beginning to utilize blockchain technology for tracing Hetian jade products, ensuring their origin and authenticity, which is positive for regulating the market and protecting the rights of consumers and investors. For instance, the 'Hetian Jade Traceability Chain' project, launched in collaboration between the School of Gemology at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and a prominent e-commerce platform, has successfully provided credible traceability information for over 2,000 Hetian jade products.
Looking ahead, the Hetian jade collection and investment market will continue to develop towards specialization, artistry, and cultural depth. Investors should focus more on the jade's scarcity, cultural connotation, carving artistry, and the influence of master craftsmen, rather than solely on its physical properties. Simultaneously, as the younger generation's identification with traditional culture grows, the cultural attributes of Hetian jade will be further explored, bringing new growth points to the market. However, market participants must also be wary of excessive speculation and counterfeit products, investing rationally to share in the long-term value of the Hetian jade market.
