Southern Red Agate Market Resurgence: Liangshan Production Area Raw Material Shortage Triggers Price Fluctuations

[Chengdu, May 15, 2024] The high-end Chinese jade market has once again turned its attention to Southern Red Agate. Recent reports from the core production area in Liangshan, Sichuan, indicate significant changes in mining activities. The output of high-quality raw materials is continuously shrinking, leading to an unprecedented tightening of market supply. This has directly resulted in a noticeable price increase in the end market. Industry experts warn that if this trend continues, the collection and investment value of Southern Red Agate will be further highlighted.

Liangshan, as one of the most important Southern Red Agate production areas globally, boasts rich mineral endowments and a long history of mining. However, years of intensive exploitation have led to the near depletion of surface and shallow-layer mineral resources. According to incomplete statistics from local mining authorities in Liangshan, the average annual output of Southern Red Agate has decreased from a peak of approximately 300 tons to less than 100 tons in the past five years. Specifically, the output of high-quality material suitable for collection has plummeted by over 70%.

"It's much harder now to find a Southern Red Agate rough stone with perfect appearance, rich color, and no obvious cracks than it used to be," revealed Li Ming (pseudonym), a veteran Southern Red Agate rough stone dealer in Liangshan for over two decades. "Previously, we could always pick out a few fine pieces from a truckload of rough stones. Now, it's rare to see one even in ten truckloads. Especially for rare colors like persimmon red and cherry red, prices have soared."

Market data shows that since the beginning of this year, the average price of Liangshan Southern Red Agate rough stones has increased by approximately 15%-20%, while the price increase for high-quality finished products has even exceeded 30%. For example, a string of high-grade persimmon red beads, which cost around 800-1000 yuan per gram at the beginning of the year, now commonly exceeds 1200 yuan, with some premium pieces even reaching over 1500 yuan. This price fluctuation is not an isolated phenomenon but a direct reflection of supply-demand imbalance.

Commenting on the current market situation, Professor Wang (pseudonym), Vice President of the China Gem & Jade Association and a renowned jade connoisseur, stated in an interview: "The scarcity of Southern Red Agate is the core driver of its value. The reduction of high-quality raw materials in the Liangshan production area is an inevitable result of finite natural resources and reflects the market's pursuit of rare resources. This tight supply situation is unlikely to reverse in the short term. For investors and collectors, this is both a challenge and an opportunity. Choosing exquisite pieces with unique artistic value and scarcity will be key to preserving and increasing value in the future."

Professor Wang further pointed out that while other areas like Baoshan also produce Southern Red Agate, their output and quality still lag behind Liangshan material, making it difficult to fully compensate for the market gap. Therefore, the future market focus for Southern Red Agate will increasingly shift towards optimizing the allocation and value extraction of existing inventory resources.

Looking ahead, as consumer awareness of Southern Red Agate's cultural value and investment attributes continues to rise, coupled with the objective reality of resource depletion in the production areas, the market price of Southern Red Agate is expected to remain firm and may see even more significant increases if high-quality raw materials become even scarcer. At the same time, the industry will also face deeper issues such as how to balance mining and protection, and how to enhance the added value of existing raw materials. For practitioners, refined processing, brand operation, and cultural creativity will be important avenues for addressing challenges and seizing opportunities. The "red storm" of Southern Red Agate is likely to continue sweeping the jade collection world.
