What makes Bi Yu so beautiful?

In my opinion, the most captivating aspect of Bi Yu is its rich and deep green color, especially the top-grade 'spinach green'. That oily luster and delicate texture are simply irresistible. It's not as flamboyant as jadeite, but it possesses a calm and understated nobility. However, precisely because of its beauty, some unscrupulous merchants take advantage, and the market is flooded with various imitations of 'Bi Yu'. Therefore, knowing how to identify it is truly crucial!

Xiao Ya's 'Three-Pronged Approach' to Bi Yu Identification:

First Approach: Observe Color and Structure – The Secret of 'Spinach Green' and the Charm of 'Cat's Eye'! 👁️‍🗨️

  • Color: High-quality Bi Yu should have a uniform, rich green color, with 'spinach green' being the most prized. This green is deep but not black, with a certain oily luster. It's important to note that the green of Bi Yu is often not pure; it may contain some black spots. These black spots are common mineral inclusions like chromite in natural Bi Yu and are one of its characteristic features. However, if the black spots are too numerous, too large, or unevenly distributed, they will affect the value of the Bi Yu. I once saw a Russian Bi Yu bangle with an exquisite spinach green color, but upon closer inspection, fine black spots were evenly distributed within it, like sprinkled pepper, very natural, which actually served as proof of its authenticity. In contrast, some dyed fake Bi Yu will appear dull, superficial, or overly uniform and unnatural in color, and may even show color deepening in cracks.

  • Structure: The structure of Bi Yu is generally fine, presenting a fibrous intergrowth or granular structure. When observed under a strong flashlight, the internal structure of high-quality Bi Yu will appear dense and uniform, without obvious graininess. Some lower-quality Bi Yu may show obvious granular structures, or even feel rough. It's worth mentioning that some high-quality Bi Yu exhibits a 'cat's eye effect', which is caused by the directional arrangement of fibrous structures within the Bi Yu. When the Bi Yu is rotated, a bright band of light will appear to move across the surface, which is very beautiful!   • Luster: The luster of high-quality Bi Yu is vitreous or greasy, appearing warm and profound. After polishing, the surface will exhibit a soft reflection, rather than a harsh glare. If the surface of the Bi Yu appears dull and lifeless, or has a plastic-like luster, then be cautious.

  • Flaws: Natural Bi Yu will more or less have some natural flaws such as cotton, veins, or cracks. These are naturally formed marks and are an important basis for judging its naturalness. However, if there are too many flaws, or if they affect the aesthetics and wearing durability, its value will be greatly reduced. Some merchants use filling, dyeing, and other methods to conceal these flaws, so everyone must observe carefully when purchasing, especially under strong light, to see if there are traces of filling, such as deepened color in cracks or a sticky feel on the surface.
