Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Soar, Industry Faces Structural Adjustment

【Yangon/Beijing】 The global jadeite market has once again turned its attention to Myanmar. According to the latest information obtained by our reporter from multiple rough stone trading channels, the supply of jadeite rough continues to show a structural tightening trend, influenced by the complex political situation in Myanmar and adjustments in mining policies. Particularly in March, the prices of high-end ice-jade and glass-jade rough saw significant increases, while prices for mid-to-low-end varieties remained relatively stable, indicating that the industry is undergoing a profound structural adjustment.

Supply Side Under Continuous Pressure, Scarcity of High-End Rough Highlights

Since the second half of last year, mining activities in major jadeite mining areas in Myanmar have been strictly restricted. Coupled with the uncertainty of transportation channels, the quantity of high-quality rough stones flowing into the international market has sharply decreased. According to market monitoring data, in the first quarter of this year, the total volume of Myanmar jadeite rough entering the Chinese market decreased by approximately 15% to 20% year-on-year. Among these, the supply of high-quality rough stones experienced an even more dramatic decline, with industry insiders estimating that the supply of rare varieties such as ice-jade and glass-jade may have decreased by over 30%.

“This tightening of the supply side is not a short-term phenomenon but a result of multiple factors,” noted Professor Li Ming, a senior expert at the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China, in an interview with our publication. “The Myanmar government is increasingly tightening control over mineral resources, aiming for sustainable resource development and increased added value. At the same time, geopolitical factors have also brought uncertainty to the mining and export of rough stones, leading to continuous upward market expectations.”

High-End Market Prices Soar, Mid-to-Low-End Market Stabilizes

Against the backdrop of continuous supply tension, demand for high-quality jadeite rough remains strong, directly driving rapid price increases. Data from multiple rough stone trading platforms shows that in March, the average transaction price of top-grade ice-jade and glass-jade rough increased by 8% to 12% month-on-month. Some exceptionally fine 'Imperial Green' or 'High-Ice Positive Green' rough stones even saw increases exceeding 15%.

In stark contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, such as bean-jade and glutinous-jade, fluctuated relatively little, largely maintaining previous levels. This reflects a further widening of market perception regarding the value of different quality jadeites. Consumers and investors are showing stronger purchasing intent and resilience for scarce, high-value jadeite.

Industry Faces Both Challenges and Opportunities

This structural price increase in rough stones undoubtedly brings dual impacts to downstream processing and retail enterprises. On one hand, prices of high-end finished jadeite products will rise accordingly, testing consumer purchasing power; on the other hand, profit margins for mid-to-low-end products may be squeezed, prompting companies to seek differentiated competitive strategies.

Wang Qiang, a veteran jadeite dealer, stated: “We are actively adjusting our procurement strategy, focusing more on the cost-effectiveness of rough stones and design innovation. At the same time, we are exploring establishing more stable cooperative relationships with local miners in Myanmar to ensure a stable supply of high-quality rough stones.”

Looking ahead, the jadeite industry may undergo a profound structural adjustment. With the increasing scarcity of high-quality rough stones, the market will pay more attention to the cultural, artistic, and collection value of jadeite. Concurrently, the application of technology in jadeite identification, traceability, and processing will become more widespread to enhance industry transparency and product added value. For investors, the long-term investment value of high-end jadeite will further stand out, while for practitioners, innovation and quality will be key to future market competition.
