Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Reach New Peaks
【Yangon/Beijing】 The global jadeite market has once again focused on Myanmar recently. According to internal industry sources and market observations, due to the complex situation within Myanmar, the mining, transportation, and export of jadeite rough continue to face severe challenges, leading to a further contraction in supply. This trend was particularly evident in March, with prices for high-end jadeite rough showing significant increases, and some rare qualities even setting new historical highs.
Supply Side Remains Under Pressure, Market Sentiment Cautiously Optimistic
Since last year, uncertainties in Myanmar's jadeite mining areas have been increasing, severely disrupting mining activities. Coupled with obstructed logistics channels, the quantity of jadeite rough flowing into the international market has sharply declined. Professor Zhang Ming, a senior jewelry and jade expert and researcher at the International Gemological Association, pointed out: "Myanmar is the sole source for over 90% of the world's high-quality jadeite. Any disruption to its supply chain will trigger a ripple effect globally. The current persistent tightness in origin supply has become the core driver of price increases."
Market data indicates that the total volume of jadeite rough entering major consumer markets such as China and Thailand has decreased by approximately 25% to 30% compared to the same period last year. Among these, the decline in top-tier roughs like 'ice jade' and 'glass jade' qualities is even more drastic, with an estimated supply reduction of nearly 40%. This supply-demand imbalance has directly led to price surges.
High-End Qualities Lead the Gains, Mid-to-Low End Market Relatively Stable
In March's market transactions, the price increase for high-end jadeite rough was particularly prominent. Jadeite rough of 'ice jade,' 'glass jade,' and 'high-ice jade' qualities saw average transaction prices rise by 10% to 15% month-on-month. Some rare and exquisite roughs with 'yang green' or 'imperial green' hues even saw increases exceeding 20%. For example, a piece of excellent quality 'ice jade' with 'yang green' suitable for a bangle has seen its market valuation increase by nearly 2 million RMB since the beginning of the year.
"The scarcity of high-end jadeite determines its price resilience and appreciation potential. Amidst supply shortages, collectors and investors are more intensely pursuing these rare resources," Professor Zhang Ming analyzed. "They value the artistic value, cultural attributes, and investment returns of jadeite more, and are relatively less sensitive to price."
In contrast, the mid-to-low end jadeite rough market performed relatively stably. Prices for ordinary 'glutinous jade' and 'bean jade' qualities showed little fluctuation, with only slight increases, generally ranging from 3% to 5%. This reflects differing consumer demands for various jadeite qualities, with ordinary consumers being more price-sensitive under economic pressure.
Market Outlook: Supply Tightness Unlikely to Change in the Short Term
Looking ahead, the industry generally believes that the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is unlikely to be fundamentally alleviated in the short term. Uncertainties in the political and economic environment, rising mining costs, and increasingly stringent environmental policies will continue to exert pressure on the supply side.
"We anticipate that prices for high-end jadeite rough will remain strong, and possibly even continue to climb, in the coming months," said a senior jadeite merchant who wished to remain anonymous. "The mid-to-low end market, however, may face greater challenges. How to extract new design and craftsmanship value from limited raw materials will be a question merchants need to consider."
For consumers, this means that the entry barrier for high-quality jadeite products will further increase. For investors, the value preservation and appreciation attributes of high-end jadeite will become more prominent. However, the market also reminds investors to be wary of blindly following trends, rationally assess risks, and choose reputable channels and professional institutions for transactions. Simultaneously, with technological advancements, the difficulty of distinguishing between synthetic and treated jadeite is also increasing, requiring consumers and investors to enhance their authentication skills to prevent fraud.
Overall, the volatility in the Myanmar jadeite rough market is not merely a reflection of supply and demand, but rather the result of a complex interplay of geopolitical, economic, and other factors. In the future, industry participants will need to navigate challenges and seize opportunities more cautiously to ensure the continuous inheritance of jadeite culture and the healthy development of the market.
