Myanmar Jadeite Rough Market Surges: High-End Material Prices Skyrocket, Industry Faces Structural Challenges

【Yangon/Beijing, April 10, 2024】 The global jadeite rough market experienced another significant wave in March 2024. According to the latest market monitoring data, continuous tightening of supply from Myanmar, the primary origin, has led to an overall upward trend in jadeite rough prices. Notably, high-quality materials such as 'ice jade' and 'glass jade' saw the most significant increases, with some top-tier roughs experiencing double-digit percentage jumps. In contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite varieties remained relatively stable, highlighting an increasingly polarized market.

Myanmar, as the world's leading jadeite producer, has long seen its political and economic fluctuations directly impact the global jadeite industry. Since the latter half of last year, a confluence of factors has severely constrained mining and transportation efficiency in Myanmar's jadeite regions, resulting in a sharp decline in the quantity of premium jadeite rough entering the international market. Industry insiders reveal that the current inventory of high-quality jadeite rough on the market has fallen to its lowest point in recent years, undoubtedly acting as the core driver behind the price surge.

"The current market exhibits a clear 'two-tier' phenomenon," stated Mr. Li Mingqiang, Vice President of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China and a veteran jadeite appraiser, in an interview with our publication. "The scarcity of high-end jadeite rough has been further amplified. Its investment and collection value have attracted substantial capital inflows, pushing prices steadily higher. The mid-to-low-end market, with its relatively ample supply and more elastic consumer demand, has seen less price volatility." Mr. Li further analyzed that this structural change will have a profound impact on the entire jadeite supply chain, compelling downstream processing and retail enterprises to focus more on brand building and product added value.

Specifically, in March, the average increase for ice jade and glass jade rough reached 8%-15%, with some exceptionally fine top-tier materials even exceeding 20%. In comparison, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite roughs, such as common 'glutinous jade' and 'bean jade,' saw increases between 2%-5%, with some ordinary pieces showing no significant change. According to incomplete statistics, the cumulative increase for top-tier jadeite rough over the past year has exceeded 30%, far surpassing other major commodities during the same period.

Market analyst Zhang Hua believes that in addition to supply-side factors, the robust investment demand for rare luxury goods from high-net-worth individuals amidst a global economic recovery is also a significant driver of high-end jadeite price increases. "Jadeite, as a non-renewable resource, has its long-term value determined by its scarcity. Under inflationary expectations, high-quality jadeite is seen as an effective tool for preserving and increasing wealth, attracting more capital attention." Zhang Hua anticipates that the tight supply of high-end jadeite rough will persist for some time, with prices expected to remain firm.

However, the soaring raw material prices have also put considerable pressure on downstream processing and retail businesses. Faced with high procurement costs, the challenge for many merchants is how to maintain profit margins while meeting market demand. Some enterprises are turning to optimizing design and refining processing, aiming to counter cost pressures by enhancing the artistic and cultural value of their products. Simultaneously, others are actively exploring alternative materials or developing the mid-to-low-end market to broaden product lines and diversify operational risks.

Looking ahead, the direction of the Myanmar jadeite rough market remains uncertain. In the short term, the situation of tight supply and high prices is unlikely to change fundamentally. In the long run, as the situation in Myanmar evolves and the global economy adjusts, the market will gradually seek a new equilibrium. For investors and consumers, a deep understanding of market dynamics and a rational assessment of jadeite's value will be key to mitigating risks and seizing opportunities.
