Myanmar Jadeite Rough Market Sees Renewed Volatility: High-Quality Stones Soar, Industry Faces Structural Shifts
【Yangon/Beijing】 The global jadeite industry's core, the Myanmar jadeite rough market, has once again become a focal point of industry attention. According to reports gathered by our correspondent from multiple sources, since March, the overall price of Myanmar jadeite rough has shown a significant upward trend. Notably, high-quality icy and glass-like jadeite roughs have experienced the most prominent increases, while prices for mid-to-low-end categories have remained relatively stable. This phenomenon not only reflects the tight supply-demand situation in the market but also signals a potential deep-seated structural adjustment within the jadeite industry.
Continued Supply Tightness, Highlighting the Scarcity of High-Quality Roughs
Since last year, jadeite mining activities in Myanmar have been affected by various factors, leading to a persistent shortage in rough stone supply. Coupled with political instability within Myanmar and increasingly stringent environmental policies, the difficulty and cost of mining high-quality veins have significantly increased. According to incomplete statistics, the total volume of Myanmar jadeite rough entering the Chinese market has decreased by approximately 15%-20% compared to the same period last year, with the reduction in high-quality roughs potentially exceeding 30%. This sustained tightening of the supply side has directly driven up market expectations.
"The scarcity of high-quality jadeite rough is the fundamental reason for its price increase," stated Professor Li Ming, a renowned jade appraisal expert and Vice President of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China, in an interview with our correspondent. "The formation of top-tier jadeite, such as icy and glass-like varieties, requires extremely harsh geological conditions and vast geological ages, making their reserves inherently limited. With a reduction in supply, the market's pursuit of these scarce resources naturally pushes up their prices."
Market Data Reveals Astonishing Increases for Top-Tier Roughs
According to internal industry data, the average price of high-quality icy and glass-like jadeite roughs increased by approximately 8%-12% month-on-month this month, with some exceptional pieces experiencing jumps of over 20%. For instance, a well-formed, moderately sized icy jadeite rough with floating flowers has been transacting at prices well above market expectations. In contrast, the price fluctuations for common glutinous and bean-like jadeite, which fall into the mid-to-low-end categories, have been relatively minor, with increases maintained between 1%-3%, and some categories even remaining largely flat.
"This indicates that market capital is concentrating on top-tier jadeite, which offers greater potential for value preservation and appreciation," analyzed Mr. Wang, a veteran jadeite trader. "Amid increasing economic uncertainty, investors and collectors are more inclined to choose hard assets with scarcity, cultural value, and artistic merit, and high-quality jadeite undoubtedly meets these criteria."
Industry Outlook: Challenges and Opportunities Coexist
The continuous rise in jadeite rough prices will have a profound impact on the entire industry chain. For downstream processing enterprises and retailers, increased procurement costs undoubtedly pose a significant challenge. Some financially weaker enterprises may face difficulties in capital turnover or even be eliminated from the market. However, for companies with ample high-quality raw material reserves, strong brand influence, and outstanding design innovation capabilities, this presents an opportunity to enhance brand value and consolidate market position.
Professor Li Ming predicted: "The future jadeite market will exhibit a trend of polarization. The investment attributes of high-quality jadeite will be further strengthened, and its value is expected to continue to climb; while mid-to-low-end jadeite will focus more on design aesthetics and wearability to meet mass consumption demands. Simultaneously, with technological advancements, jadeite traceability systems and appraisal standards will become more comprehensive, which will help maintain market order and protect consumer rights."
Furthermore, there are calls within the industry to strengthen cooperation with Myanmar to jointly explore sustainable jadeite mining and trade models, ensuring the stability and transparency of raw material supply to promote the long-term healthy development of the industry. Facing an unpredictable market, the jadeite industry stands at a crossroads, and only by actively responding can it seize the future.
