Myanmar Jadeite Rough Market Heats Up: High-End Materials See Sharp Price Increases, Industry Faces Structural Challenges
【Yangon/Beijing, March 28, 2024】 March 2024 has witnessed another significant surge in prices across the global jadeite rough market, with high-quality ice-jade and glass-jade rough from Myanmar showing the most prominent increases. According to internal industry data, the average price increase for high-end jadeite rough this month has reached 10% to 15%. While mid-to-low-end varieties have experienced minor fluctuations, their overall prices have remained relatively stable. This trend not only highlights the value of scarce resources but also signals a profound structural adjustment within the global jadeite industry chain.
For a long time, Myanmar, as the world's primary source of jadeite rough, has seen its supply status directly impact the entire industry. In recent years, a confluence of factors, including geopolitical dynamics, tightening mining policies, and the increasing depletion of mineral veins, has led to a persistent shortage in the supply of Myanmar jadeite rough. This supply-demand imbalance is the fundamental driver behind the price increases. Professor Zhang Ming, a senior industry analyst and chief economist at the Jadeite Market Research Center, points out: “We are in a classic seller’s market. The scarcity of high-quality jadeite is the core driver of its continuous price ascent. Especially against the backdrop of increasing global economic uncertainty, rare gemstones, as a hard currency, have become more attractive for their value preservation and appreciation properties, drawing in significant capital.”
Specifically, the market performance this month shows a clear polarization. High-end jadeite, such as collector-grade ice-jade and glass-jade, has seen the most significant price hikes. A high-quality ice-jade rough with excellent clarity and luster could see its market price increase by hundreds of thousands of RMB compared to last month. For instance, a top-tier ice-jade rough weighing approximately 1 kilogram, initially valued at around 5 million RMB at the beginning of the year, has now surged to nearly 6 million RMB. Exquisite pieces with unique green hues or rare floating flowers command even higher premiums. In contrast, mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, such as bean-jade and glutinous-jade with ordinary clarity and color, although influenced by overall market sentiment, experienced smaller price fluctuations, with increases maintained between 3% and 5%, and some even remaining stable, without significant follow-on price surges.
This structural price increase has had varying impacts on the downstream processing and retail sectors. For businesses specializing in high-end custom and collector-grade jadeite, while procurement costs have risen sharply, the relatively low price sensitivity of their target customer base and the substantial profit margins of high-end jadeite mean the impact is relatively manageable. Some businesses have even taken the opportunity to raise product prices. However, for businesses primarily catering to the mass consumer market with mid-to-low-end products, cost pressures are more significant. If they cannot effectively control procurement costs or enhance product added value, their profit margins will be further squeezed, potentially leading to survival challenges.
Looking ahead, the tight supply situation in the jadeite rough market is unlikely to ease in the short term. Professor Zhang Ming predicts: “Over the next five years, the supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is likely to continue to decline, with the output of high-quality materials becoming increasingly scarce. This will not only continue to push prices higher but also accelerate the industry's shift towards refinement and branding. Concurrently, the application of technology in jadeite identification and traceability will become more widespread to meet the market's demand for transparency and trust.”
In response to this trend, industry participants need to actively adjust their strategies. On one hand, strengthening cooperation with the places of origin to ensure supply chain stability; on the other hand, deepening design innovation to enhance product added value, and leveraging technological means to improve market competitiveness. Furthermore, consumers, when investing in or purchasing jadeite, should pay more attention to professional appraisals and authoritative certificates, rationally assess market value, and avoid blindly following trends.
