Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Soar, Drawing Industry Attention
[YANGON/BEIJING] The global jadeite rough market has once again focused on Myanmar, where the persistent supply crunch from its core mining regions is pushing up prices for high-quality jadeite raw materials at an unprecedented pace. According to the latest industry monitoring data, since March, transaction prices for top-tier jadeite rough, such as 'ice-kind' (冰种) and 'glass-kind' (玻璃种), have shown significant increases, with some rare categories seeing surges of over 15%. While the mid-to-low-end market is also affected by rising costs, price fluctuations there remain relatively moderate.
Myanmar has long been the world's primary source of jadeite rough, and its internal situation and policy adjustments have a decisive impact on the international market. In recent years, a confluence of factors, including mining restrictions, tightening export policies, and geopolitical uncertainties, has led to a continuous contraction in rough stone supply. According to incomplete statistics, Myanmar's jadeite rough exports in 2023 decreased by approximately 10%-12% compared to the previous year, and export data for the first quarter of 2024 is expected to continue this downward trend, undoubtedly exacerbating the market's supply-demand imbalance.
"The current market situation is a concentrated reflection of years of supply-demand imbalance," noted Dr. Li Ming, a renowned jewelry and jade appraisal expert and visiting professor at the China University of Geosciences (Beijing)'s School of Gemology, in an interview with our newspaper. "The scarcity of high-quality jadeite rough is the core driver of its value. As exploitable resources become increasingly depleted, and market demand for top-grade jadeite with excellent 'kind, water, and color' remains strong, price increases are an inevitable trend. Particularly, those 'ice-kind' and 'glass-kind' materials with collection and investment value exhibit greater price elasticity and are more likely to be sought after by market capital."
Market data indicates that the average increase for high-end jadeite rough this month has reached 8% to 10%, while specific categories of premium rough, such as imperial green and high-ice vibrant green reaching collection grade, have even set new records for transaction prices in recent years. In contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, such as common 'glutinous-kind' (糯种) and 'bean-kind' (豆种), have also seen slight increases, but these generally remain within 3%, demonstrating the market's differentiated pricing strategy for jadeite of varying qualities.
Regarding future market trends, the industry generally holds a cautiously optimistic view. On one hand, Myanmar's jadeite rough supply is unlikely to increase significantly in the short term, and may even tighten further, which will continue to support high-end jadeite prices. On the other hand, with global economic recovery and increased consumer purchasing power, investment and consumption demand for jewelry and jade will maintain steady growth. However, it is worth noting that excessively high prices may also suppress some consumer demand, prompting the market to turn to alternative products or mid-to-low-end items.
"For investors and collectors, now is a window period to select high-quality jadeite, but greater emphasis must be placed on appraisal skills and risk control," Dr. Li Ming advised. "Blindly chasing high prices is not advisable. One should rationally analyze the market and choose jadeite products that are scarce, in good condition, and have a clear provenance. Simultaneously, processing enterprises should actively explore new design concepts and craftsmanship to enhance product added value and address the challenges posed by rising raw material costs."
Looking ahead, with technological advancements, synthetic jadeite and enhancement treatment techniques will also become increasingly sophisticated, undoubtedly presenting new challenges to the natural jadeite market. Nevertheless, the unique charm and scarcity of natural jadeite will continue to ensure its irreplaceable position in the global jewelry market. All stakeholders in the industry must work together to maintain market order and ensure the healthy and sustainable development of the jadeite industry.
