Myanmar Jadeite Raw Material Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Soar, Industry Faces Structural Adjustment

[YANGON/BEIJING] The global jadeite market has recently refocused on Myanmar. According to internal industry data, influenced by various factors, the supply of Myanmar jadeite raw materials continues to be tight. In March 2024, the prices of high-quality jadeite rough stones showed a significant increase, with top-tier categories such as 'ice jade' and 'glass jade' experiencing particularly prominent surges. This trend not only directly impacts the upstream of the supply chain but also signals a potential profound structural adjustment for the entire jadeite industry.

For a long time, Myanmar has been the primary source of global jadeite rough, with its output and quality directly influencing the pulse of the international jadeite market. However, since 2021, due to a combination of factors including internal instability in Myanmar, adjustments to mining policies, and increasingly stringent environmental requirements, the extraction and export of jadeite rough have faced unprecedented challenges. According to incomplete statistics, compared to the same period last year, the actual export volume of Myanmar jadeite rough in the first quarter of this year decreased by approximately 15% to 20%, with a more significant decline in high-quality rough.

“This tightening of supply is not a short-term phenomenon but is intertwined with multiple complex factors,” noted Dr. Li Ming, a senior jewelry and jade appraisal expert and visiting professor at the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) School of Gemology, in an interview with this publication. “Geopolitical uncertainties have led to disruptions in mining operations, while the government has become more cautious in issuing mining licenses. Coupled with a deepening environmental consciousness, the development of new high-quality mineral veins has become more difficult, and some old mining areas even face production halts or reductions. All these factors directly push up raw material costs.”

Market data indicates that in March's raw material transactions, the transaction prices of high-quality jadeite rough, such as 'ice jade' and 'glass jade,' increased by at least 10% to 15% month-on-month, with some rare premium pieces seeing surges of over 20%. In contrast, the prices of mid-to-low-end jadeite rough remained relatively stable, with increases between 3% and 5%, demonstrating an increasingly clear differentiation in market demand for different qualities of jadeite. This polarized price trend further highlights the investment attributes of high-end jadeite, while the mid-to-low-end market faces greater competitive pressure.

Dr. Li Ming further analyzed: “The scarcity of high-end jadeite determines its price resilience and appreciation potential. Against a backdrop of continuous supply tightness, collectors and investors' enthusiasm for high-quality jadeite remains undiminished, further driving up its market value. For the mid-to-low-end market, due to stronger substitutability and higher consumer price sensitivity, its price increases are somewhat limited.”

Facing the continuous rise in raw material costs, downstream processing and retail enterprises are actively seeking coping strategies. Some companies are intensifying the refined management and utilization of existing inventory, increasing product added value by enhancing design and craftsmanship. Meanwhile, some enterprises are also turning their attention to other alternative gemstones or developing new consumer markets to diversify risks. However, for enterprises highly dependent on Myanmar jadeite raw materials, the pressure for transformation and upgrading is immense.

Looking ahead, the tight supply situation in the jadeite raw material market is expected to continue for some time. Before the internal situation in Myanmar fully stabilizes and mining policies become clear, the price of high-quality jadeite rough still has room for further appreciation. Industry experts generally believe that this will accelerate the survival of the fittest in the jadeite industry, prompting enterprises to pay more attention to brand building, cultural connotation, and sustainable development. At the same time, consumers will also focus more on the quality, origin, and cultural value of jadeite, rather than simply pursuing price. The entire industry is entering an era that places more emphasis on value than mere quantity, and structural adjustment is imperative.
