Myanmar Jadeite Rough Market Surges: High-End Material Prices Skyrocket, Industry Faces Structural Adjustment

【Yangon, March 28, 2024】 In March 2024, the global jadeite rough market once again experienced significant fluctuations. According to firsthand information obtained by our reporter from major jadeite mining areas and rough trading markets in Myanmar, the overall price of jadeite rough has shown an upward trend due to a combination of multiple factors. Among these, prices for high-quality ice jadeite and glass jadeite, which are rare materials, have seen particularly significant increases, while prices for mid-to-low-end varieties have remained relatively stable. This trend not only reflects the tight supply-demand situation in the market but also signals that the global jadeite industry chain is facing a profound structural adjustment.

For a long time, Myanmar, as the sole origin of over 90% of high-quality jadeite worldwide, has seen its internal situation changes significantly impact the global jadeite market. Recently, tighter mining policies, uncertainties in transportation, and geopolitical factors have collectively led to a continuous shortage of raw material supply. According to incomplete statistics, the quantity of high-quality jadeite rough entering the market this month has decreased by approximately 15%-20% compared to the same period last year. However, market demand remains robust, especially from collectors and high-end jewelers in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia, who continue their enthusiastic pursuit of top-tier jadeite rough.

“The scarcity of high-end jadeite rough is being re-priced by the market,” stated Dr. Li Mingde, a renowned jade appraisal expert and visiting professor at the Gemological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), in an interview with our newspaper. “We have observed that over the past month, the transaction prices for top-grade ice jadeite and glass jadeite rough have generally increased by 10%-25%, with some exceptionally fine 'King of Stone' rough even seeing premiums exceeding 30%. This increase far surpasses market expectations and also reflects investors' demand for safe-haven assets and their recognition of the value of rare resources.”

In stark contrast to the heated high-end market, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough have shown relatively minor fluctuations. While common varieties such as 'dou zhong' (bean-seed jadeite) and 'nuo zhong' (glutinous rice jadeite) have also seen slight increases, the overall growth has been contained within 5%, and prices for some average-quality materials have even remained flat. This indicates an increasingly differentiated market valuation for different qualities of jadeite, with consumers and investors pursuing 'value for money' more rationally.

This structural change has profound implications for all segments of the jadeite industry chain. For upstream miners, limited high-quality resources will bring higher profit margins, but also greater mining costs and risks. For midstream jade carving enterprises, the difficulty and cost of acquiring high-quality raw materials will significantly increase. This may prompt them to focus more on design innovation and craftsmanship to add higher value to limited raw materials. For downstream retail terminals, high-end jadeite products will become even more precious, and their pricing strategies will adjust accordingly, while the mid-to-low-end market may face more intense competition, requiring brand building and differentiated services to attract consumers.

Looking ahead, Dr. Li Mingde believes that the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is unlikely to change fundamentally in the short term. He suggests that industry participants should pay more attention to the refined utilization of raw materials and promote technological innovation in jadeite appraisal, processing, and design. Simultaneously, establishing more transparent and standardized trading mechanisms to reduce intermediate costs is also a crucial direction for ensuring the healthy and sustainable development of the industry. As consumers' understanding of the cultural and artistic value of jadeite continues to grow, the future jadeite market will focus more on quality, cultural connotation, and personalized customization, rather than merely the simple accumulation of resources. This industry reshuffle, triggered by fluctuations in raw material prices, will ultimately drive the entire jadeite industry chain towards higher quality and greater added value.
