Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Remains Tight, High-End Market Prices Soar, Industry Faces Structural Adjustment

【Yangon/Kunming, March 2024】 Driven by sustained robust demand for high-quality jadeite globally, coupled with tightening mining policies and geopolitical factors in Myanmar's jadeite mining regions, the Myanmar jadeite rough market has recently shown renewed signs of supply tightness. Particularly in the latest market dynamics of March, prices for top-tier jadeite rough, such as ice-jade and glass-jade, have seen significant increases, while mid-to-low-end categories, though experiencing some fluctuations, have remained relatively stable overall. This indicates that the jadeite industry is undergoing a profound structural adjustment.

According to data from the Kunming Jade Trading Center, over the past month, the average price of top-grade ice-jade and glass-jade rough has surged by approximately 15% to 20%, with some rare varieties experiencing increases of over 30%. In contrast, prices for mid-range rough, such as glutinous-jade and bean-jade, have seen increases of less than 5%, while prices for ordinary rough blocks have shown almost no significant change. This data clearly illustrates the market's pursuit of scarce resources and its cautious approach towards ordinary commodities.

“The current market exhibits a clear polarization trend,” stated Professor Li Ming, a visiting professor at the China University of Geosciences (Beijing) Jewelry Institute and a senior jadeite appraisal expert, in an interview with our reporter. “The scarcity of high-quality jadeite determines its potential to resist decline and even rise against the trend. On one hand, the Myanmar government's control over mineral resource extraction is becoming increasingly stringent, especially regarding environmental requirements and export quota restrictions for large mining areas, leading to a sharp reduction in the quantity of high-quality rough entering the market. On the other hand, despite global economic downturn pressures, high-net-worth individuals' demand for value-preserving and appreciating assets remains strong. Jadeite, as a unique cultural and artistic treasure and a rare mineral, naturally becomes their preferred choice.”

Professor Li further analyzed that this supply tightness is not a short-term phenomenon. He predicted that in the coming years, the supply of Myanmar jadeite rough will continue to be restricted, with the output of high-quality rough becoming even scarcer. This will cause the market prices of high-end jadeite to remain firm and even climb further. He suggested that processors and retailers within the industry should adjust their procurement strategies, focusing more on the quality and rarity of rough, while also strengthening brand building and cultural added value to cope with increasingly fierce market competition.

From the perspective of market participants, some large jadeite processing enterprises have already begun to adjust their inventory structures, increasing their reserves of high-quality rough to cope with potential future supply shortages and price increases. Simultaneously, some enterprises are turning their attention to design innovation and craftsmanship upgrades, attempting to compensate for increased raw material costs by enhancing the artistic value of their products.

However, for small and medium-sized jadeite merchants, the continuous rise in raw material prices undoubtedly increases operational pressure. They face the challenge of acquiring high-quality raw materials within a limited budget and passing on costs to consumers. Some merchants indicate they are trying to establish more direct cooperative relationships with mining areas in order to obtain more stable raw material supplies and more competitive prices.

Looking ahead, the jadeite industry will enter a new phase that places greater emphasis on quality, brand, and cultural connotations. With the structural changes in Myanmar's jadeite rough supply, the market will increasingly favor jadeite products with unique designs, exquisite craftsmanship, and deep cultural heritage. Concurrently, the application of technology in jadeite identification, traceability, and trading will become increasingly widespread, providing strong guarantees for the healthy development of the industry. It is foreseeable that while the raw material market faces challenges, the entire jadeite industry will remain vibrant and continuously explore new development paths.
