Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Soar, Industry Faces Structural Adjustment
【Yangon/Beijing】 March 2024 witnessed renewed volatility in the global jadeite rough market. According to the latest market monitoring data, continuous shrinkage in jadeite rough supply, particularly for rare, high-quality varieties such as icy and glass-like jadeite, has been observed. This is primarily due to stricter mining policies in major Myanmar mining areas and geopolitical factors. Prices for these premium roughs have seen double-digit increases, with some top-tier pieces becoming extremely difficult to acquire. In contrast, while the mid-to-low-end jadeite rough market has also experienced slight upticks driven by costs, overall price fluctuations have remained relatively stable, indicating an increasingly pronounced market differentiation.
For a long time, Myanmar has been the primary global supplier of jadeite rough, accounting for over 90% of the world's total output. However, in recent years, the Myanmar government has progressively tightened controls over mineral resource extraction, aiming to protect the environment, regulate mining practices, and enhance resource added value. Coupled with complex security situations in some mining areas, which lead to reduced extraction efficiency and increased transportation costs, these factors collectively push up the cost of rough jadeite.
“We have observed that since the second half of last year, the import volume of Myanmar jadeite rough has decreased by approximately 15% year-on-year,” stated Professor Li Ming, Vice President of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China and a senior jade expert, in an interview with our reporter. “The decline is even more significant for high-quality roughs, directly leading to a shortage in the domestic high-end finished jadeite market. It is anticipated that this tight supply situation will be difficult to fundamentally reverse within the next year.”
Market data indicates that the average price increase for high-end icy and glass-like jadeite roughs this month has reached between 12% and 18%, with some exceptional pieces experiencing jumps exceeding 20%. For instance, a high-quality icy green bangle rough, for example, is now estimated to be worth nearly 200,000 RMB more than at the beginning of the year. While mid-to-low-end roughs, such as glutinous and bean-like varieties, have also been affected by overall cost transmission, with increases maintained between 3% and 5%, market transaction volumes have not significantly shrunk, demonstrating sustained consumer demand for everyday wearable jadeite.
“This structural price increase is essentially the market's re-evaluation of the value of scarce resources,” commented Mr. Wang, a veteran jadeite dealer. “The investment attribute of high-end jadeite is becoming increasingly prominent; it is not just an ornament but also an asset that preserves and appreciates in value. Mid-to-low-end jadeite, on the other hand, is returning more to its consumer goods attribute, with relatively less price elasticity.”
Looking ahead, the jadeite industry is likely to undergo a profound structural adjustment. On one hand, the high-end jadeite market will continue to operate at a high level, with its investment and collection value further enhanced, attracting more high-net-worth individuals. On the other hand, the mid-to-low-end market may face greater competitive pressure, requiring brands and processing enterprises to meet the needs of mass consumers by improving design, optimizing craftsmanship, and reducing operating costs.
Professor Li Ming suggests that in the face of persistent raw material shortages, domestic jadeite enterprises should actively explore new development paths, such as increasing investment in design and research and development to enhance the cultural added value of products. Simultaneously, strengthening cooperation with Myanmar mining areas to secure more stable raw material supply channels is crucial. Furthermore, when purchasing jadeite, consumers should pay more attention to product quality, craftsmanship, and cultural connotations, rather than blindly chasing prices.
Overall, the dynamic changes in the Myanmar jadeite rough market are profoundly impacting every link of the global jadeite industry chain. How to seize opportunities amidst challenges will be a critical issue for all industry participants.
