Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Reach New Peaks
【Yangon/Beijing】 The global jadeite market has once again turned its attention to Myanmar. According to internal industry sources and market observations, the supply of Myanmar jadeite rough continues to be tight due to a combination of factors. This has led to a significant increase in prices for high-end jadeite rough this month, particularly for top-tier qualities such as 'ice-kind' (bingzhong) and 'glass-kind' (bolizhong), with their price increases far exceeding market expectations. Concurrently, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite varieties have remained relatively stable, indicating an increasingly pronounced market differentiation.
Since the beginning of this year, jadeite rough mining and export activities in Myanmar have been constrained by multiple factors. Geopolitical uncertainties, adjustments to mining policies, and increasingly stringent environmental regulations have collectively contributed to a decline in rough production. According to incomplete statistics, the total volume of Myanmar jadeite rough entering the Chinese market has decreased by approximately 15% to 20% compared to the same period last year. This structural contraction in supply has directly driven up the transaction prices of rare, high-quality rough.
"The most significant characteristic of the current market is its 'polarization,'" noted Professor Li Ming, a senior jadeite appraisal expert and Vice President of the China Gem & Jade Association. "Prices for high-quality, rare jadeite rough, especially those reaching ice-kind and glass-kind levels, have seen astonishing increases. We've observed some top-tier rough transacting at prices 20% to 30% higher than at the end of last year. This is not merely a result of supply-demand imbalance but also a revaluation of the value of scarce resources by the market." Professor Li further explained that because such rough inherently possesses extremely high collection and investment value, its price fluctuations are less affected by macroeconomic factors and more by its inherent quality and rarity.
Market transaction data indicates that the average price of ice-kind jadeite rough increased by approximately 10%-15% this month compared to the previous month, while glass-kind rough saw even higher increases, with some premium pieces rising by over 20%. In contrast, mid-to-low-end jadeite rough such as 'glutinous-kind' (nuozhong) and 'bean-kind' (douzhong) performed more steadily, with price fluctuations within 5%, and some categories even experiencing slight pullbacks. This suggests that amid overall market tightening, capital and attention are rapidly concentrating on high-end, rare varieties.
Regarding future market trends, the industry generally maintains cautious optimism. On one hand, the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is unlikely to fundamentally ease in the short term, which will continue to support high-end jadeite prices. On the other hand, with global economic recovery and increased consumer purchasing power, demand for high-quality jewelry and jade remains strong. However, the mid-to-low-end market may face greater competitive pressure, and finding a balance between quality and price will be a critical consideration for businesses.
"We anticipate that prices for high-end jadeite rough will remain firm, and potentially continue to rise modestly, for some time to come," Professor Li Ming predicted. "But at the same time, the market will pay more attention to the legality of rough sources, mining sustainability, and processing craftsmanship. When purchasing, consumers will not only focus on the 'kind,' 'water,' and 'color' but also on the cultural value and environmental principles behind them. This requires the entire jadeite supply chain, from mining to sales, to move towards greater transparency and standardization."
This significant increase in high-end jadeite rough prices not only reflects its unique value as a scarce resource but also signals that the global jadeite market is undergoing a profound structural adjustment. For investors and collectors, accurately grasping market dynamics and selecting high-quality, high-value jadeite products will be key to future returns.
