Liangshan Southern Red Agate Production Faces Resource Scarcity, Market Braces for Structural Adjustment and Price Hike
Liangshan, Sichuan, October 26, 2023 – The core production area of Liangshan Southern Red Agate, renowned as 'China Red,' has recently reported a tightening in market supply. According to in-depth field investigations and aggregated information, the extraction of high-quality Southern Red Agate raw stones in the Liangshan region is experiencing a structural decline. This not only poses a challenge to the supply side of the market but also foreshadows significant upward price pressure for Southern Red Agate in the foreseeable future.
Over the past decade, the Southern Red Agate market has rapidly evolved from a niche collectible to a widely consumed item. Industry data indicates that from 2015 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of Southern Red Agate's market transaction volume once exceeded 15%. Particularly in the high-end boutique sector, prices for some top-tier materials even multiplied several times over. However, this rapid growth has come at the cost of continuous depletion of non-renewable mineral resources. As one of the most crucial sources of Southern Red Agate, the Liangshan production area faces increasing difficulty in extracting high-quality veins. Easily accessible shallow-layer premium materials are nearly exhausted, while deep-layer mining incurs high costs and unstable yields.
“We have observed a year-on-year decrease of at least 20% in the output of high-quality Southern Red Agate raw stones from the core mining areas of Liangshan this year,” noted Li Ming, a senior expert and geology professor at the China Gem & Jade Association. “This decline is not a short-term fluctuation but a long-term trend reflecting diminishing resource endowment. The scarcity of premium materials, especially those characterized by high density, 'persimmon red,' and 'cherry red' hues, will become even more pronounced.”
This tightening supply has already manifested in the retail market. Merchants in major jade trading hubs like Beijing's Panjiayuan and Shanghai's Chenghuangmiao generally report a significant increase in procurement costs for high-quality Southern Red Agate, coupled with reduced selection of goods. Mr. Wang, a Southern Red Agate wholesaler, revealed, “Previously, I could source dozens of kilograms of premium raw stones from the production area each month. Now, getting ten kilograms is considered good, and the price is 15% to 20% higher than before.”
This structural change in the supply side is expected to have a profound impact on the overall market landscape of Southern Red Agate. Firstly, price increases are inevitable. With the scarcity of high-quality raw materials, finished product prices will also rise, especially for high-end collectible Southern Red Agate, whose investment value will be further highlighted. Secondly, the market will place greater emphasis on the refined utilization of raw materials and value addition. Carvers and designers will dedicate more effort to transforming limited high-quality raw materials into artworks with greater artistic and collection value through ingenious concepts and exquisite craftsmanship.
Furthermore, there are calls within the industry for enhanced protection and sustainable development of Southern Red Agate resources. Experts suggest exploring the establishment of stricter mining permit systems to curb disorderly extraction and increase efforts in ecological restoration of mining areas. Concurrently, research institutions are encouraged to conduct more in-depth studies on the genesis and distribution of Southern Red Agate, providing scientific basis for future resource exploration and rational utilization.
Looking ahead, the Southern Red Agate market will enter a new phase, shifting from 'quantity' to 'quality.' While the market may experience price volatility and supply shortages in the short term, in the long run, this will prompt the industry to focus more on quality, culture, and artistic value. For collectors, this presents both challenges and opportunities, making the selection of truly valuable and appreciation-potential pieces amidst increasingly scarce resources a new and critical task.
