Liangshan Southern Red Agate Raw Material Supply Tightens, Market Prices Poised for Another Surge
【Liangshan, Sichuan】 Recent observations indicate significant changes in the mining activities within the core production areas of Liangshan, Sichuan, renowned as the “Home of Chinese Southern Red Agate.” According to in-depth field investigations by our reporter and various consolidated reports, the output of high-quality Southern Red Agate rough stones continues to decline. This trend has garnered widespread attention across the entire industry chain, signaling a potential new round of price increases in the Southern Red Agate market.
Liangshan Southern Red Agate has long been favored by collectors and investors for its warm texture, rich red hue, and inherent scarcity. However, years of intensive mining have progressively depleted surface and shallow-layer deposits. Latest data from the Liangshan Prefecture Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources reveals that over the past five years, the average annual extraction of Southern Red Agate rough stones in the Liangshan area has dropped from a peak of approximately 2,000 tons to less than 800 tons currently. Crucially, the proportion of high-quality rough stones reaching collection-grade standards has sharply decreased. An anonymous mine owner disclosed to our reporter, “It’s now ten times harder to find a good piece of material than before. Many old mine shafts are almost exhausted, and new discoveries have yet to yield significant breakthroughs.”
Structural changes in market supply are already evident. According to the “2023 China Jewelry and Jade Market Report” published by the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China, the market transaction value of Southern Red Agate has maintained an average annual growth of 15% over the past three years. However, during the same period, the supply of high-quality rough stones decreased by approximately 30%. This intensifying supply-demand imbalance has directly led to rising rough stone prices. Currently, wholesale prices for first-grade Southern Red Agate rough stones have increased by about 20%-30% compared to the same period last year, with some premium materials even experiencing a “priceless but unavailable” situation.
Professor Li Ming, a senior jade expert from the School of Gemology, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), stated in an interview with our newspaper: “The resource endowment of Liangshan Southern Red Agate is finite, and over-extraction inevitably leads to resource depletion. The current scarcity of high-quality raw materials is an inevitable market response to resource consumption. In the long run, this will prompt the market to focus more on the intricate processing and cultural added value of Southern Red Agate, rather than merely relying on simple rough stone trading. Simultaneously, we should be vigilant against market speculation to prevent prices from detaching from actual value.”
In response to the tight raw material supply, Southern Red Agate processing enterprises are actively seeking solutions. Some large processing factories have begun to maximize the utilization efficiency of their existing inventory of high-quality rough stones and enhance the artistic value of their products through exquisite carving techniques. Additionally, some enterprises are also exploring agates from other origins, but their quality still shows a significant gap compared to Liangshan Southern Red, making them difficult to fully substitute.
Looking ahead, with the continued scarcity of high-quality raw materials, the market price of Southern Red Agate is expected to remain robust, potentially even experiencing another round of rapid increases. For investors, high-quality Southern Red Agate artworks of collection grade will further highlight their potential for value preservation and appreciation. However, general consumers should exercise greater caution when purchasing, discerning authenticity, and focusing on the craftsmanship value of the products. The industry calls for strengthened scientific management and protection of mineral resources to promote the sustainable development of the Southern Red Agate industry, ensuring the cultural inheritance and healthy market of this precious jade.
