Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Reach New Peaks

【Yangon/Beijing】 In March 2024, the global jadeite market once again focused on Myanmar. According to industry insiders, influenced by a confluence of factors, the supply of Myanmar jadeite rough continues to show a tight trend. Especially in the high-quality rough segment, market prices continued to climb this month, with some top-tier 'ice species' and 'glass species' jadeite rough experiencing double-digit percentage increases. Concurrently, while prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough also saw slight upticks, the overall fluctuation was relatively small, indicating a significant market differentiation.

Supply-Side Pressures Persist, High-End Rough Scarcity Becomes Prominent

Myanmar, as a major global source of jadeite, has long seen its mining activities constrained by geopolitical factors, environmental policies, and the depletion of mineral resources. Entering 2024, these uncertainties have not subsided; instead, they appear to be intensifying. According to incomplete statistics, the output from major mining areas in Myanmar, such as Hpakant and Hweka, decreased by approximately 15% to 20% compared to the same period last year. This sustained tightening of the supply side has directly led to a sharp reduction in the quantity of rough circulating in the market, particularly for high-quality rough with collection and investment value, which has become 'extremely difficult to find.'

"The scarcity of high-quality jadeite rough on the market, especially top-tier materials like 'ice species' and 'glass species,' has reached an unprecedented level," noted Professor Li Ming, a senior jadeite appraisal expert and council member of the Gems & Jewelry Trade Association of China, in an interview with our reporter. "These rough stones are not only the foundation for crafting high-end jewelry but also important investment assets. With a continuous decrease in supply, price increases are an inevitable trend."

Market Data Confirms: Significant High-End Gains, Mid-to-Low End Stabilizes

Monitoring data from major jadeite rough trading markets indicates that in March, the average prices of 'ice species' and 'glass species' jadeite rough increased by 8% to 12% month-on-month. Some exceptionally fine and large rough stones even saw increases exceeding 15%. In contrast, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, such as 'glutinous species' and 'bean species,' saw increases contained within 2% to 5%, with the market performing relatively stable.

For instance, a typical 'ice species' rough suitable for a floating flower bangle, which might have been estimated at around 1 million RMB last year, now commands transaction prices easily exceeding 1.1 million RMB, or even higher, for rough of comparable quality and size. This significant price disparity not only reflects the scarcity of high-end jadeite but also demonstrates the market's strong demand for high-quality jade.

Industry Outlook: Investment Value Highlights, Risks Coexist

Looking ahead, the industry generally believes that the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is unlikely to be fundamentally alleviated in the short term. This implies that prices for high-end jadeite still have room for further appreciation, and its investment value will continue to be prominent. However, investors must also be wary of market risks.

"In the current market environment, investing in high-end jadeite rough requires specialized knowledge and keen judgment," Professor Li Ming emphasized. "On one hand, one must pay attention to fundamental elements like clarity, color, and cracks of the rough. On the other hand, a deep understanding of market supply-demand dynamics and policy trends is also crucial. Blindly following trends or seeking short-term exorbitant profits could lead to losses."

Concurrently, with technological advancements, the techniques for synthetic and treated jadeite are also maturing, posing new challenges to the market. Consumers and investors must choose reputable dealers when purchasing and request appraisal certificates from authoritative institutions to ensure the naturalness and value of the purchased jadeite.

Overall, after another round of price increases in March, the investment attributes of high-end products in the Myanmar jadeite rough market have become increasingly apparent. However, in a market environment where opportunities and challenges coexist, rational analysis and professional judgment will be key to success for participants.
