Myanmar Jadeite Rough Market Heats Up: High-End Material Prices Hit New Peaks, Industry Faces Structural Adjustment
【Yangon/Beijing】 In March 2024, the global jadeite rough market once again witnessed a significant price surge, with high-quality ice-jade and glass-jade rough from Myanmar showing the most prominent gains, far exceeding market expectations. Concurrently, prices for mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, while experiencing minor fluctuations, remained relatively stable overall, signaling that the jadeite industry is undergoing a profound structural adjustment.
According to the latest data from the Yangon Gemstone Trading Center, the average transaction price for high-end jadeite rough this month increased by approximately 15%-20% compared to the previous month, with some rare, top-tier materials even recording gains exceeding 30%. A senior jadeite buyer, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed: "To acquire a piece of high-quality ice-jade or glass-jade rough now, one not only has to pay a higher price but also faces intense competition. There are fewer and fewer good materials on the market, and everyone is scrambling for them."
Supply Shortage as the Dominant Factor
Undoubtedly, the core driver of this price increase is the persistent shortage of jadeite rough supply from Myanmar. In recent years, due to various complex factors, mining activities in Myanmar's jadeite regions have been strictly restricted, leading to a significant reduction in the output of high-quality rough. Furthermore, geopolitical uncertainties have exacerbated the fragility of the supply chain, posing numerous challenges to the circulation of rough from mines to the market.
"We anticipate that the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough will continue for some time," stated Professor Li Ming, a senior expert at the Gemological Association of China and a renowned jade appraiser, in an interview with our newspaper. "This is not merely a short-term phenomenon but a result of resource depletion, changes in mining policies, and increased environmental protection requirements. For high-end jadeite, its scarcity will become even more pronounced."
Structural Differentiation in Market Demand
It is worth noting that despite the soaring prices of high-end jadeite, the mid-to-low-end jadeite rough market exhibits different characteristics. Data shows that prices for common glutinous-jade and bean-jade rough only increased by 3%-5%, with some even maintaining their original prices. This indicates a structural differentiation in market demand.
"Consumers' enthusiasm for high-quality, high-value jadeite remains undiminished, and they are even willing to pay a premium for rare exquisite pieces. However, for ordinary quality jadeite, consumers are more rational and focus more on cost-effectiveness," said Wang Li, an analyst at the Shanghai International Gem & Jewelry Exchange. "This differentiating trend will push jadeite processing enterprises to focus more on refined and differentiated routes, enhancing product added value, rather than solely relying on the accumulation of raw materials."
Future Outlook and Challenges for the Industry
Looking ahead, the jadeite industry will face both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, the scarcity of high-end jadeite will further highlight its investment value, attracting more capital inflow; on the other hand, the mid-to-low-end market will need to enhance competitiveness through innovative design, exquisite craftsmanship, and brand building.
Professor Li Ming suggested: "Industry practitioners should actively explore new business models, such as integrating with technology, utilizing blockchain for traceability to enhance consumer trust; concurrently, they should also pay attention to the development of other jade-producing regions globally to seek alternative resources and alleviate over-reliance on a single origin."
It is foreseeable that with the continuous evolution of market supply and demand, the jadeite industry will accelerate its natural selection process. Only those enterprises that can grasp market trends, focus on quality and innovation, will stand out in the fierce competition and achieve sustainable development.
