Myanmar Jadeite Rough Supply Continues to Tighten, High-End Market Prices Reach New Peaks
【Yangon/Beijing】 In March 2024, the global jadeite market once again focused on Myanmar. According to internal industry data, the supply of Myanmar jadeite rough continues to be strained, influenced by a combination of geopolitical factors and restrictions on mining operations. This trend has directly impacted the end market, leading to a significant increase in the prices of high-quality jadeite rough, with top-tier varieties like 'ice-kind' and 'glass-kind' showing particularly prominent gains, while prices for mid-to-low-end varieties have remained relatively stable.
For a long time, Myanmar has been the sole origin for over 90% of the world's jadeite rough. However, in recent years, the complexity of its domestic situation and the government's adjustments to mineral resource extraction policies have severely restricted the export volume of jadeite rough. According to incomplete statistics, the total volume of Myanmar jadeite rough entering the international market in the first quarter of this year has decreased by approximately 15% to 20% compared to the same period last year. This structural change in supply is undoubtedly the core driver behind the current price surge.
“The current market shows a clear polarization,” stated Dr. Li Ming, a senior jadeite appraisal expert and visiting professor at the Gemology Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), in an interview with our reporter. “Scarcity is the key factor determining the price of high-quality jadeite. With the increasing depletion of premium veins and rising mining costs, the supply of top-tier 'ice-kind' and 'glass-kind' rough is inherently limited. Against the backdrop of overall supply tightening, the prices of these rare varieties naturally soar.”
Market monitoring indicates that within this month, the average price increase for well-preserved, high-quality 'ice-kind' jadeite rough has reached 8% to 12%; some 'glass-kind' rough, reaching collector's grade, has even seen a leap of over 15%. In contrast, mid-to-low-end jadeite rough, such as common 'glutinous-kind' and 'bean-kind', although also experiencing some cost-driven increases, have seen their price fluctuations contained within 3%, or even remained stable, due to a relatively larger market inventory.
This price trend has had a profound impact on the entire jadeite industry chain. For upstream raw material suppliers, hoarding high-quality rough presents both risks and opportunities; for midstream processing enterprises, the difficulty and cost of acquiring premium raw materials are increasing, prompting them to focus more on refined processing and brand premium; for downstream retailers and consumers, the investment attribute of high-end jadeite is further highlighted, yet the selection space for entry-level and everyday wear products remains broad.
Looking ahead, Dr. Li Ming believes that the tight supply of Myanmar jadeite rough is unlikely to fundamentally change in the foreseeable future. He advises investors and collectors to pay more attention to the quality, craftsmanship, and cultural value of jadeite, rather than blindly chasing short-term price fluctuations. At the same time, he calls on the industry to strengthen research and development and promotion of alternative gemstone materials to meet growing market demand and reduce reliance on a single origin.
“The market needs to be more transparent and standardized,” Dr. Li Ming added. “By establishing a more comprehensive traceability system and quality standards, not only can consumer rights be protected, but also the healthy and sustainable development of the jadeite industry can be promoted.”
Despite numerous challenges, jadeite, as an important carrier of traditional Chinese culture, continues to attract countless enthusiasts with its unique charm and profound cultural heritage. Under the combined effect of tightening supply and sustained strong demand, the market value of high-end jadeite is expected to remain firm, and the entire industry will undergo a profound structural adjustment.
